Last year I changed car from a F plate BMW 320I which was basically a road legal track car with a 2.8 200bhp engine fitted, fully re-vamped suspension and brakes yada yada... the insurance knew about EVERYTHING. It was awesome but the bodywork was going rusty.

I sold that and bought a normal car, an X reg Punto sporting.... It cost MORE to insure the FIAT Evil or Very Mad Fuck knows how they calculate these things.

"Renewal"? Only if you want the Loyalty Penalty, which I think they spell as "introductory discount".

I'm sure someone else would be able to clarify this... but I think after so many modifications they insure them as kit cars which gets a reduction on the price for some reason

Every company has a different approach and a different underwriting strategy.

Generally speaking, modified cars aren't insured with mainstream carriers like Aviva, AXA, Morethan etc, they're with Lloyds based syndicates like Equity Red Star, Markerstudy, Canopious et al. The less mainstream companies will mostly delegate out authority to a specialist broker who will operate a scheme for modified cars - these scheme rates can be a bit bonkers cheap TBH. Obviously anyone paying their premium doesn't think it's bonkers cheap, because customers want everything and a bag of crisps for less than a quid.

Switch to something 'normal' and you fall outside the scheme, the scheme rates no longer apply and you get a higher premium. Seems strange, but that's just how it rolls.

Anyway, price isn't everything when it comes to insurance.... honest.

I put some alloys on my golf to make it "modified" and went with a specialist modified vw insurer which meant I could speak to an actual person and got it cheapest that way.

HIC were the guys https://www.hertsinsurance.com/

2 years ago when I passed my test aged 22 I paid £1450 tpft for a 1.2 Seat Ibiza (comparatively much cheaper than similar cars).

I've just got a quote on a BMW 330ci with 2 years no claims and now being 24 - less than 900 quid fully comp!

Has this "you can't discriminate against gender" business come in to play now?

That doesn't sound too bad to someone who got charged £692 TPFT on a fucking punto... 29 and 3NCB at the time, passed my test just after I turned 18, clean license and have a PSV rating Mad

Getting quotes around £450 FC this year so its better but still more than the bike cost, and I've only got 1 year NCB on that.

No, not yet. It's due to come in end of year, if it doesn't get overturned.

£301.84 today wooop.

Went from Admiral 10-month accelerator (10 month policy which gives a full NCB) to Admiral Multicar. Saved myself £384 in the process just on the one car... not to mention the money we'll save on the rest of the cars in the house when it's their turn to add them

Jesus....

Car insurance is getting insane now, and is so far out of line with inflation it's untrue. Weirdly, when I was 20 (12 years ago) it was always far more expensive to insure my bikes.

From memory I was paying c.£400 TPFT for a 10 year old 2.0l Sierra estate, and c.£700 for my VFR 400.

My NSR 250 prior to that at 17 I paid £1300 to insure, but around £300 for my car which was a 1.3 Triumph Acclaim.

Looks to have gone completely the other way round now...car insurance quotes for me now don't vary much whether it's a Peugeot 206 or an S/X-type Jaguar and is around £700 TPFT. Makes sense having amassed 15 years of driving experience Confused

Quotes go up or down depending on the month.

Those prices might be something to do with the fact that he lost his licence Wink

Nothing to do with licence losing per se, but 6 points yes.

Inflation isn't really a driving factor behind car insurance TBH, in fact it's almost been counter inflationary for some time now, as costs in transacting business have diminished greatly with the rising use of internet based distribution methods. Actual expense base on car insurance is probably less than 10% nowadays.

There's several factors which have given rise to premium increases; the most important one really is that the market price has been suppressed for many years now, ie the car insurance market has been really, REALLY soft where there's so much capacity out there with companies wanting to write loads of gross written premium. This you can usually get away with for a time and not get burnt, but a lot of insurers really failed to notice the Bodily Injury timebomb waiting to go off, or noticed it but just didn't want to act as they were still chasing the GWP to grow market share.

Bodily injury is by far the biggest factor. PPO's and changing legislation, the ease of getting solicitor representation, the upswing in number of accident management companies and the general public's something for nothing attitude mean claims inflation has been running ~9% year on year since 2006. In other words, the price needs to rise 9% year on year just to keep pace, not to address profitability issues.

Add to that, 3-4 years ago you'd get a combined operating ratio of 100+ and still make money, as you were getting 3.5% investment income on premium. Nowadays you're lucky to get half that, and a 100+ COR is a position of making a loss. That means the underwriting result has to be stronger, or you've got to save on expenses ie redundancies etc, or you're just burning capital.

Last up, Reinsurance costs have risen sharply as well. Why? Well, take a look around the world over the last couple of years and see how many natural disasters there's been. That means the real money companies are taking a battering and their net price per mill of cover has to increase across the board. RI cost on a motor book is pretty hefty, TBH. And it's only getting worse.

Proverbial rock / hard place.

Got my renewal, my insurance is up at the end of this month, last year it was about £300 TPFT and the first year after a DR10 on a 1.8 Picasso. This year they want £770 Laughing

Got it for £250 this morning. I don't think it has an awful lot to do with insurance so the prices are all over the place. More about a regular income to play with on the markets and all that trickery.

I'm currently paying £2150 for my 1.6 16v citroen xsara VTR.

Reasonable since i was 19 at the time and i've 0ncb.

So being 20 now, and 1 years no claims, i'm looking at a new car. Subaru Impreza Sport (non turbo). 2L. £904 for the year, tpft.

Perfect.

Wonder what mods i can get away with?

complete bodykit
rear spoiler
bonnet bulge
strut brace
alloys
decals/stickers
suspension changes
braided brakes
uprated brakes
air filter
misc engine alterations Wink
chipped/EMS
TURBOCHARGING
exhaust system changes
non standard engine Wink
high level/extra brake lights (on spoiler)
rally lights
tinted windows
removal/replacement of seats
dashboard changes
driving lights
sports steeringwheel....

Guess how much?

fucking £1200. STILL CHEAPER THAN I'M PAYING FOR THE XSARA.

Granted i'm cheaper buying a WRX STI and insuring that for the £3k quote i was given, as it'll still work out cheaper than doing all those mods to the scooby.

But how confusing is that?

edit: scratch that, i'll buy the sport and spend another £6k on it in mods, and still be cheaper than the sti Mr. Green

I've got a 5 Series, 2.8 and paying £570 a year, not bad at 22 I don't think.
