Hey Guys,

I'm in Navy and due to deploy very soon so I'm just curious what preperations any of you made?

I've made a will and sorted all financials for the next 7 month but can't really think of much else?

Cheers
Shaane

If you've got your will sorted, and sorted all the financial stuff then you did more than I did. I don't know what internet is like on the ships now, but it was pretty hit and miss back then. With internet access you can sort most things out.

Depends on your circumstances, whether you have wife/family or still essentially living at home with parents.

More important is the stuff you take with you, make sure you've got all the uniform/kit you are entitled to, cold weather gear, tropics, etc. And also, the stuff you need to buy yourself to make it comfortable.

I got confined to the ship once, over my last weekend before going away to Norway (fucking balls up to do with being in date for fitness test), so I couldn't get home to pick up the last of the gear I wanted, mostly cold weather stuff because it was the arctic.

Where you off to, and on what ship? (Just curious).

well, you've done more than i did when i deployed to kosovo Very Happy

take plenty of money for runs ashore on the trip there and back. take an mp3 player and associated charger.

first deployment?

decent sunglasses, plenty of sun cream. did quite a few 7 month plus deployments, and found that boredom is the worst part, especially when you're running patrols in battle watches. take some good books too. any other q's feel free to drop me a PM,

Lee (ex killick stoker)

oh, and best of luck mate Thumbs Up

Start working on your thousand-yard stare now. You'll need to have it down perfect for when you get back.

Oh, and don't bother taking a shiny suit - you'll have plenty of opportunity to pick one up when you get there. Thumbs Up

Lots of reading material, fill up your mp3 player.

Can't give you much more advice as I wasn't a sailor. If its anything like the army, 99% boredom 1% terror.

Best advice I can give is:

If you wake up, get out of bed and your foot is ankle deep in water, then make your way to a life boat.

That and don't get dead. Thumbs Up

Cool, best of luck with it. Thumbs Up

Type 45, so that means lots of locker space and 4 to a cabin is it? A veritable cruise liner Wink

Life on the ocean wave wasn't my cup of tea, I couldn't seem to do anything right by anyone, got in lots of trouble for my apparent incompetence, and generally got fucked about by anyone who had a shit job that needed doing. Also got incredibly bored, whilst settling into a permanent state of zombie like fatigue.

Square peg, jack.

There is also too much porn.

[EDIT] Just had a look on the Navy site. It seems Trevor Soar is now Commander in Chief Fleet. He was a Captain at the time I was in. I feel this may explain why his ship was such a ball ache to be on. Rolling Eyes

I've done a few trips away (Illustrious,Ark Royal,Fort George and Argus, plus middle east).

Just make sure your kit is fully square and in good nick. It can be tricky to get stores while away. Also fill up a big external hard drive full of films and games and porn and such.

The Darings have i-pod connectors, or so the RN are so very keen to point out.

You're in the navy, I wouldn't worry too much about the need for a will, you're more likely to be killed crossing the road. At 4am.
