By the same token, for many people, conforming and buying what everyone else buy's is more important than buying what they really want.
I met a guy at Box Hill last year who pulled up to park alongside me on an R1.
I got chatting to him, as you do, and he told me he had been riding on a full license about 18 months.
When I complimented his bike, he was quite dimissive and told me that after he passed his test, the bike he really wanted was a Yamaha V-Max, but he bought the R1 because his two mates had sports bikes, and talked him out of the Max.
Ironically, shortly afterwards one of these guys crashed badly and stopped riding, and the other one just gave it up.
So there he was, riding about on his own, on a bike he was deeply unhappy with, that he bought in order to conform to other people's ideas of what he should be riding, although on the plus side, he was about to buy a V Max.
Sadly this is often the case, that people buy according to what's popular, rather than taking the time to find out what bike suits them best.
For example, I know someone who love's the Suzuki B-King, but won't buy one because everyone says it looks weird and ugly.
Fact is I know it's a great bike, but conformity and following the herd for him, as for many people, is often more preferable.
As regards your comment about BMW's being expensive to run and service, that's an innacurate generalisation.
This particular BMW is a flat twin, which is one of the easiest engines in the world to work on.
OK so if you're doing dealer servicing, it would be expensive but no more expensive that servicing most other modern bikes.
The most labour intensive part of the service is valve clearances.
On the BMW twin, the heads are sticking out exposed, so it's four bolts and the rocker covers are off, exposing old fashioned nut and bolt tappets, which take minutes to set.
Now take your modern faired Japanese multi superbike to the dealer, and you'll find about the same time taken to do the job on the Beamer, will be taken up just stripping away the bodywork to get to the rocker covers before even starting the job, and then of course it all has to go back on.
So it's swings and roundabouts.
BMW dealers charge more, but many of the bikes are not very labour intensive.
I'll admit though that I'm referring to the BMW twins, not the K's but then that is what the thread is about. |
