PostPosted: 16:17 - 08 Apr 2012    Post subject: First aid kits on bikes? Reply with quote

In all the years I was a young "Hoon" going everywhere in the shortest possible time I never even gave first-aid a thought.

Today I was given a very basic and small first-aid pack and thought that it would easly fit into the tiny space in the tail-piece of my bike.
So now I have the most basic first-aid kit on my bike, but at least I have something in the event of a spill.
It might not help with severed limbs and the like , but minor cut & grazes and stuff could be dealt with.

All of a sudden I feel better, knowing I am ready for the first-aid situation when out on my bike Wink Laughing .
I may even throw myself off my bike, just to see how I get on Shocked Laughing .

Anybody else carry a first-aid kit on their bike?

EDIT : Does this mean that I am now officially old Sad

I carry a pack with my tools and a standard crappy scrapes-and-scratches kit, plus a couple of foil blankets, scalpels, and a selection of airways. Not that I have any idea what to do with them, but as stinkwheel noted, the next bloke (or blokette) along might, and would appreciate having them there in a clearly marked location.

Never really felt the need. If it's a first aid kit for small cuts and grazes, it wont really make that much of a difference to if I waited until I got home where I could wash and dress it properly.

I have a small first aid kit that I keep in my top box, however I generally only have the top box on when going to and from work (carries my lunch etc) and when going to the shops.

I keep a weeny one under my seat. Not just plasters/first aidy stuff, but also a little pack of handwipes as well as a pack of paracetamol as I've had headaches on the bike before now.

Sod's law will be that if I don't have it, I could have used it.

And superglue for the close-up work. Duct tape can patch large holes, too Smile

I dont see much of a point. Whatever i would need it for, im sure i could get someone nearby to give me something to help with an injury.
Although i would if i was going for a long journey. Seems kind of pointless otherwise.

Small sachet, one large plaster, breakdown no, driving license and tax disc. And supposed to leave a tenner there to, but it keeps on getting lost should I see a sign with any of the words M BK OR KFC.

I carry 2 in the car but not one on the bike yet...mainly due to lack of storage space. It's something I've been meaning to sort out.

Same here - one in each car but haven't got any space on the bike.

Would be useful to be honest, I'm always the one stopping at accidents to lend a hand (usually old gits crashing into each other around here!)

Would need a waterproof bag of some sort... hmm

Duct tape and/or superglue to reattach or close open wounds!! Twisted Evil

Anything that's not split wide open or falling off isn't worth worrying about.

Seriously though, I have precious little space on the bike as it is. (Although I guess I could put a small kit in the tankbag)

Where does it end? If we carry a first aid kit, should we carry a full toolkit too? What about a high viz vest? Or a TACBE emergency beacon? Or a field microsurgery kit? Or a defibrillator? Or 12 gold sovereigns for bartering? Or a silk map? Or some snares?

I just carry a mobile phone. Can't really envision the need for anything else really. I have a first aid kit in the car, most modern cars do. Generally if I ride on the road then there are cars around, ergo there are first aid kits around.

At the end of the day we ride bikes to get away from day to day life, not to carry it all with us. If I wanted to carry stuff I'd buy a top box, or a Pan European. Or, in fact, I'd take the car.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Nope sorry I have`nt got a beacon, soveriegns, maps, or snares.

Guess I`ll just have to leave the bike in the garage, wrapped in it`s bubble-wrap with the heater on Sad .

I dont take everything out with me and I dont think it should be mandatory to carry a First-Aid kit.
It`s just an idea that suits Me Thumbs Up

I don't carry a first-aid kit on my bike, but if someone's really in that much pain, I've got a hammer as part of the tool kit.

Neither do I, even though I could use most of one if called on... I would swap the hammer for a junior hacksaw though, much more likely to be useful Wink

Well, the hammer is a happy coincidence - it doubles up as pliers, a knife and a variety of other things.

Well, at least that's how I justify my kidney harvesting tool kit for RTAs.* Whistle

* For those of you that don't know me... I don't actually do that...

Hope I never have an accident with you around, a swift blow from a hammer is much more preferable to a sadisticly slow and painful sawing off of the head with a tiny saw... Twisted Evil
