Well, got a new lid the other day, and had my first 'decent' length run out today, had my visor down, doing about 55mph when I see a yellow blob, and bang! I thought somebody had let a hand grenade off it was that loud, a suicidal bumble bee (which was Mahoosive by the way) had splattered on my visor and splurged a yellow goo all over it, and upon looking down, it was by my feet, trying to sting my boot.
Point is, I'm now terrified of having my visor up, not only is a bee gonna hurt in the face at 55mph, but it's gonna sting me afterwords!
I know your all going to say MTFU, but what are that chances of this occurring, will I be getting frequently dive bombed by bees? Or was I once in a million?
I imagine it certainly would of hurt if I had my visor up.
Cheers,
Veho |

You'll learn to recognise where to keep your visor shut. Bug strikes aren't all that common - not the big ones anyway. If you're worried get some tinted specs.
I wear these when I'm riding, they are thin and light and you don't notice they are there. They are also very cheap - just over a pound a pair:

Pretty sure it was a random occurrence for you. But shit does happen and you just go with the flow I guess.
I was mountain biking in France a few years ago, and I was flying pretty fast down a fire road when a hornet hits my helmet mouth piece (MTX style lid) and then flips to the inside and gets stuck to the felt lining. All I remember is panicking like fook, jamming on the anchors, pulling over and in a frenzy, fucking about with the D-rings trying to get the lid off where I then prodded the hornet with stick until it got the fuck off my helmet Was funny as shit, but if it wasn't for the full-face helmet, i'd have got it in the mouth, which wouldn't have tasted so good. ____________________ The mistresses: 2000 Honda CBR600f, 2000 Honda VTR1000 |

I hate riding with my visor down and I never do unless the rain is really bad, or I get above 50mph. Dunno why, just really dislike it. Always ridden like that, so I guess MTFU is my answer ____________________ 'Allo! My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!

I probably ride about 90% of the time with the visor up too.
Commuting and riding, up to about 40-50mph the the visor is always up. The only time its down is if I notice an increased number of insects, or on NSL and motorway speeds.... or if rain hitting my face is making visibility a problem.
From my own 6-7 years of daily riding experience I'd suggest that a major strike is extremely rare. Yes it can happen, but usually below 50mph it's a minimal problem ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

How, at 55mph, did it end up by your feet trying to sting your boot ??? ____________________ www.angliaroadtraining.com

When I did my test, the examiner passed me, but said that if it was up to me he'd have failed me cos I rode with my visor up!!!
Apparently, a mate of his lost his leg when he was hit in the face by a wasp. Swerved and hit a roadsign...ended a promising football career. So anyway, it's made him a crusader for riding with closed visors..
I've been hit a few times over the years by insects various, bith with and without visor....it fecking hurts
I also prefer an open visor, but ride most of the time with sunglasses...the pleasures of biking in warm countries ____________________ '93 Africa Twin RD07, C-90,MTX-125,H-100,XL-125, a 125UAG(CG copy!) |

Relatively new to this myself and would quite happily jaunt through some old country lanes nearby with my visor up. Only about 30mph or so then I got a mahoosive fly in the eye and nearly crashed.
Was half blind for the ride home, was not fun. I now always ride with the visor at least past my eye line. Some of the bug splats across it have been pretty horrific |

Back in 1981 (yawwwwwwwwwwwwn) before i had passed my test, i was riding up the A38 from Devon to Birmingham. I was unable to use the M5 due to L-Plates at the time.
I was riding at about 50mph on a dual carriageway near Gloucester when i spotted what appeared to be a sparrow in a stripey coat.
The Bee hit me right in the eye before i could flick down my visor.
It was a pretty uncomfortable to say the least, but i had to continue the journey home.
Next morning, i woke up to a black eye that looked like it had been won in a boxing ring..........and of course, nobody believed what really happened!!!
Also been hit by wood pigeons on two other occasions......once square in the chest (almost bringing me off the bike) and once on the shoulder.
These days, i tend to ride with my visor one or two clicks open - that way, i get the breeze in my face but not the winged beasties! ____________________ Current......Kawasaki ZZR1200 C2H and Kawasaki ZZR600 E7

Visor down most of the time for me. It's quieter. Never been hit by anything larger than bees before, have been dive bombed by birds of various sizes on more than one occasion. ____________________ My Flickr |

Get a lid with a built in sun visor.
Best of both worlds for the Hot summer days....looks out window, if we get any...
This way, I can ride visor up if I want.
Still not sure how that Bee landed by your foot at 50 though... ____________________ My Lane Position is always AWESOME!! |
