Does anyone here not have one fixed address during the year?

Reason I ask is that I stay at University for half the year and home for the rest. Time at each address is virtually identical.

Is it legitimate to change my license address to the University one and go with that on the insurance? Far cheaper in that postcode (saves £100-150 depending on the bike).

Or is it a case of ringing the insurance co and explaining the situation? It wouldn't be ideal to have them refuse a claim because I'm riding 200 miles from home.

Next year it gets more clear cut because I'll be there for 40 weeks so definitely able to use that address.

Cheers.

My daughter has this exact same situation with her car. It's at home right now but will be in Cambridge from september onwards when she starts yr 2 at Uni.

12mths premiun at home - £1060
12 months premium at uni digs - £870

I asked the insurance company and they said insure it at home right now and change the address when she takes the car off to Uni, then they'll refund the pro-rata difference, so we'll get probably £100 less admin fees back.

Unless I'm mistaking something, this is a different circumstance - is she there all year around? If not, what do you do in vacation time?

I spend 9 weeks there, 5 weeks 'home', 9 weeks there, 5 weeks 'home', 9 weeks there, then 15 weeks 'home'.

Though I have a postal address all year round as it's halls of residence.

Seems it would cost more in admin fees to change the address every few weeks.

By "next year" I mean September 2013. I'm moving out completely then so it's obvious I can name it as permanent residence location.

Up until then, I can honestly call neither location my permanent home, that's the issue.

I would speak to the Ins co about this.

Clearly if you insure at whichever is the cheapest and something happens at other address and they find out that you reside there for a good % of the year, you are giving them a excuse not to pay.

Clearly this cannot be a uncommon situation for them, given the number of students there are....

Yeah. I think I will give them a call.
What makes it complex is that it is almost an exact split. 27 weeks at one address, 25 weeks at another. A holiday or two upsets it, so obviously I'll go for the cheaper address if possible.

When I queried my insurance about this they told me I needed to tell them where my permanent address is.

They defined that as where the bike will be for 51% of the year.

Which was at home, just.

If it comes down to that, then I'll pay for an extra night or two's rent Wink

I've always gone by the address on my driving licence / V5. If I am going to be there long enough to warrant changing my address, then that's the address it is insured at.

That said, I've been settled for the past decade and insurers have probably got a bit more arsey about things like this - anything to avoid a payout.

Give them all the information - by email, ideally - and let them sort it out.

^^^What he said.^^^
If you do it verbally then you can be sure that they will wriggle out of paying out if something goes wrong.

I'm with bikesure and when I joined and told them I was student they wanted both addresses and said I'd be paying a premium dependent on my home address (£90 higher) and as I barely have the bike there at all, I just told them to take that address off.

But maybe your insurer will take both addresses into account like that?
