Hey guys.

I know this has probably been answered a hundred times but I couldn't seem to find any conclusive information other than the usual 'bashing' that goes on (not on this forum).

Basically. I have the opportunity to get a 2007 Yamaha R6 restricted from a garage for £3995 all service, MOT'd etc.

I like going out rides with my cousin who rides a Ninja 250R and have recently sold my RS125FP. Now I could keep up find with him on my RS but I am wondering how the restricted R6 would do. I understand the bike is a lot heavier but I assume they take that into account when they are dyno'ing the bike to the 33bhp.

I dont' care about its top end speed. I just want to be able to accelerate decently fast and be able to enjoy myself cornering and out on runs.

What, roughly speaking, would be the 0-60? Would it keep up with the ninja?

Should be fine on that bike. The Ninja only makes about 25 bhp anyway. Chances are your RS was putting out a similar amount if it was derestricted.

£4k seems worryingly cheap for a 2007 R6 though?

I would say that the extra torque from the bigger engine will help the R6 to keep up with the little 250, one of my friends has a Ninja 250 and it can move quite well when it has to (32.5bhp officially).

I did DAS though so have never ridden a restricted bike.

I had a g2 ninja restricted. Top speed - 110 and it still got there pretty fast. Nothing like standard but you can still get good speed through corners.

0-60 on it I reckon was probably 5 seconds mate, maybe a bit quicker...

Overall all the restriction does it just stop mind boggling acceleration. Although because R6 are extremly high revving bikes I think it might suffer a bit more than something less brutal.

33bhp so you're obviously fairly young. To me that's a lot of money for a bike anyway but have you tried getting insurance quotes? Unless you're 21/22 it might prove very difficult to get insured at all, a reasonable price is another matter. However if you are 21/22 then you would be able to do the Accelerated Access so you wouldn't have to bother with a restricted bike.

Anyway, to answer your question. I'm not too clued up on RS125s but Don't they make near enough 25/27bhp? Now a little RS is going to weigh nowhere near as much as an R6 so the power/weight ratio is probably going to be very similar. An RS125 is doing what it was built for, a restricted R6 is not. In short, you aren't really going to be any faster on a restricted R6, and higher up in the rev range isn't going to feel very good. A restricted R6 may be more reliable than an RS125 though.

How far are you into your restriction period? If you are nearing the end then restricted it for a while might not be a bad idea, but I think you were just as well keeping your RS.

I found that leaving my 125 behind and jumping on my restricted 6r was very helpful tbh. Learnt to control the bike without worrying as much because you don't have a super sensitive throttle or stupid amounts of power being handed to you. Personally it's a better thing todo because when the restriction is up and you get the full 110bhp out the R6 or whatever they are it will feel like a new bike but hes already used to the weight/handling.

My restricted er5 went faster than my Ninja 250. Should think you wouldn't have a problem with an R6!

Thanks for the reply guys. Im actually 24! I am not exactly sure why I did the A2... guess I just wanted to work up to the full power bikes as I usually jump into things and end up paying for it...

The bike is a bit cheap because it has quite a lot of scratches on the tank and fairings and was dropped. Its all fully fixed now but obviously they have to reduce the price for that.

All I'd say is if I was offered a straight 07' R6 for that price with a few scratchs I would probably be taking it. Smile Good luck Thumbs Up

That's exactly what I was hoping for. I've been on my cousins ninja a good few times and I am quite happy with the power atm.

Personally i think that shape R6 will be a bit faster than all the stats I gave for my old ninja because of the Generations of engineering between them.

Thats what I ride atm Very Happy Unrestriced though. Amazing bike, Amazing handleing does everything I want it to. Full of grunt and in my opinion the fastest 600 of its time. Doesn't quite rev as hard as the R6 but in terrms of size it's physically alot bigger than the R6 and RR's etc.

haha! Well.. you get away with it... its a kick ass bike. Its the bike I was wanting but im sure if I got it I would quickly end up at 4 grand with all the pickup, delivery, restriction kits and fitting fees etc.

R6, I think I will go for it. If i get bored with the restriction I will just try my DAS.

I did my A2 when I was 17 Smile So by the time I was 19 I was riding my full powered C1h Very Happy I'm only 20 now Razz

I was always under the impression that super-sports bikes were rubbish under restriction. Is that not the case?

No there not to bad. I'd say anything over 600 and I seriously wouldn't bother but a restricted 600 is still quite pokey and as I previously said you get to learn to handle bigger machines.

I agree with you there, that is what I've done but with an FZR600R not an R6. Also, I was on a CG125 before, not an RS125 which has considerably more power. My main concern was the insurance on a relatively expensive R6, which wouldn't be cheap to insure for someone young. However, at 24 I'd say go for it. As Shane said, by the time you take the restrictors out you will be used to the bike completely and therefore less likely to make a dangerous error at high speeds.
