Hi Guys,

Just wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself... My name is Ravi, I'm 24 and based in Walsall (near Birmingham). I have been fascinated with bikes since as long as I can remember despite having never ridden on one but I have finally taken the first steps to getting qualified. I have my theory test and DAS training course booked for early next month.

I have been looking about and think I will be getting a Suzuki SV650S as it seems to be rated as a good first bike and can find older ones for around £2k.

I work in an office during the week 9-5. I would like to use the bike maybe for commuting but also having a bit of fun at the weekends.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Im doing a 1 hour taster session on the 29th and start my DAS on 4th May over two weekends finishing on the 13th May. Got my Mod1 booked for the 18th.

I have bought boots, jacket and gloves. I will be buying trousers shortly but was wondering if you guys have any suggestions for helmets? I appreciate that everyones head shape is different but I was wondering which companies I should be looking at?

There was a site a while back that had reviews and tests on helmets to see how certain ones held up. I don't remember the site address but I'm sure someone will.

Hi

As others have said, go to your local bike shop and try on as many helmets as you can and choose one that fits, and is within budget.

SV is a good first choice for a bike, though im a bit biased. You will be able to find an older one for much cheaper than £2k though, or a very good example. Thumbs Up

I will get into my local shops and just work my way through their stocks to find what fits me. On that note, do any of you know any particularly good stores around the Birmingham area? So far I have visited Bikers Work, Street Bike, JS Accesories and Hein Gerrik.

Have a shop around, but you will be able to get the 2003 model cheaper than that (as already said). If its the bike your set on getting have a look on forums.sv650.org, they have some bargains and good examples on there.

No offence intended, just not for me is all.

The bike started out as £1500 but as it was not selling, the owner got the MOT done and increased the price to £1600.

I sent her a pm asking about the bike and stated that the low price was due to it not being nice and clean and that the log book had not been maintained. She said that two long standing members of that forum had been servicing and maintaining the bike for her (and she is a moderator of that forum as well) so I’m somewhat filled with a little confidence that I wouldn't be buying a dud bike. Someone is going to look at the bike this weekend and if still on sale after that I will be heading down next weekend to take a look.

Will hopefully be able to take someone who knows about bikes with me to help make a more informed desission.

On a side note. The gloves I ordered arrived today and were the wrong size Sad

but I gave the company a call back and they said they would exchange them for the correct size. Bit of a pain but at least I will get a properly fitting glove!

I have been having a look everywhere I can think about for the bike but finding it hard to find close to me. Its going to be at least a month until I pass my test though so I'm in no particular rush Smile

Welcome to the forums Rav...

As you're from Walsall ( down the road from me ) I dare say you know of Dudley Port just past Great Bridge, if so there's a bike shop on the left hand side just after the lights going into Dudley, they sell bikes and gear called Black Country Motorcycles ( their gear is just above budget but pricey imho...

If you turn right at Dudley Port lights heading into Tipton, about two minutes down the road is a bike garage with a small shop attached called Black Country Motorcycle Training ( not affiliated to the above shop, this one's been going years ) the shop attached do motorcycle gear also, budget stuff but decent and the garage is the only place I'll take the bike for MOTs and work if I haven't got the time to do it myself...

Give us a shout if you get stuck...

Thanks for the advice Handsome. I will have to check those places out for gear and look at them for future MOTs.

I have put a deposit down on a bike today after my friend found a listing on Ebay for a blue 53 SV650S. The current owner will be booking it in for an MOT tomorrow so I will get a full 12 months and will drop it off to me in the middle of the week. Super excited!

Welcome to the site.
Don't forget though that you can get bike couriers so you could get a bike from further a field, just get someone else to check it out. The only problem their would be if you actually fit it correctly but that could be altered if you found a bike you liked.
