Hi, the time has come to renew my phone (thank god, as my Samsung piece of crap finally died today)

I don't want an iphone, so what is good out there?
Sat nav would be usefull, as would being able to use it as a 'walkman', ideally with a proper 3.5mm headphone jack.
I'm guessing that probably sums up 99% of the phones on the market...? Laughing

Cheers
Thumbs Up

HTC Wildfire / Desire
Sony Xperia Ray

My son and stepdaughter both have Wildfires, and I have the Xperia. I've never owned or used an iPhone, but I can certainly rate the HTC and Sony smart phones

My Xperia has satnav and mapping applications, as well as the 3.5mm jack for the music and video etc

I had a wildfire for 10 months, that fucking POS made me want to throw it out the window. Way too slow and too small a screen to do the things it lets you do. It's basically a shit fucked up version of my desire S.

New HTC One looks good, but depends on your budget. I got my phone as a pretty good upgrade deal on o2, so have a look at what offers you can get is all I'd suggest. Thumbs Up

At the minute I reckon Samsung Galaxy SII (still!), HTC One X or wait a bit for the SGS III.

I have a samsung gts8500 at the moment, i love the screen on it but it has been so troublesome i dont know if i can bear to have another samsung.

It has been off to be repaired 3 times for software glitches, and after it came back the last time (2 weeks ago) the camera refuses to work properly.

Yesterday i tripped and it ended up smacking the floor, hence the screen in knackered.

Thanks for the advice guys.

The S2 has been now updated with the new firmware, Android 4.0.3. While it has not made much difference it has made the phone a little faster and the battery life is a good deal better.

I'd recommend one but then if the S3 is due out you might as well hang on for a little while longer.

As said above, the wildfire is the cheap, too slow crappy version of the desire and desire s.

HTC's are brilliant so long as you get a newish decent one.

SGSII are good as well.

Most decent droids have sat nav and other stuff.

Desire HD I have, decent video/ camera, still quick, lots of support for it and can be had on ebay for decent prices Thumbs Up. Not the brand spanker (thats the One X) but my mate has one, prefer the Desire! Its got a metal case for a start, seems a lot more rugged Laughing.

Although the One X has a better screen, better cpu, better camera etc.

I've got the wildfire. It's alright, but very small and very slow. I've had it for quite a while now. Can't really use many apps, but it's okay for basic things. Will be upgrading phones when I go to America (because they don't do a UK version of the phone I want).

Dad has the HTC One X. It's amazing. Huge screen, great quality screen, fast. I do notice that it's practically always on charge though.

I'd definitely go for one of the new HTC's.

I've had my Desire S for 14 months now and it's taken some serious abuse and still works absolutely perfectly. I've dropped it down the stairs twice, dropped it in a 2" deep puddle for a few seconds, and it's hit the floor more times than I can remember, yet it's never, ever played up.

I've got 2 mate's who've dropped iPhone 4's out of their pocket and they've both smashed the screen to bits.

I wouldn't call 'very small, very slow, and can't use many apps' alright. It's shite. Trust me when you have a decent phone you'll realise. You would be better off with an old nokia brick.

But that's what you expect from a budget smartphone really. 'Alright' is relative really depending on your exact needs. It handles receiving emails, recording phone calls and various instant messaging programs just fine (but a little slowly), so it's alright for me. The only real app that I use is a guitar tuner.

And I wouldn't be better off with an old nokia brick, because it couldn't do everything that I need it to do.

I've used good phones, including the HTC One X, and yeah, felt how good they were. But I don't really need all the extra power.

The only reason I'm actually upgrading this phone is because I want a physical qwerty keyboard and the android OS.

Fair enough, I just found that it would let you do everything at once (like my current phone does just fine) and then crash and lag and be a cunt.

As you can tell I didn't have the best experience with that phone, and I am trying to encourage other people to spend a little more and get something decent Razz

I've never had that. Very Happy

It seems to reset itself once in a blue moon, but I'm actually pleased at how tough it is. I've often dropped it from heights (albeit only 3 or 4 meters) and it has hit objects on the way down and the phone is still in pretty much perfect condition.

Oh, I had no idea Wink

I do agree with you though, you won't regret saving up to buy something better.

I was the same, I had the original Galaxy - the i7500. It was such a fuck up of a phone that Samsung quietly deleted it from history Very Happy So bad eventually o2 conceded it wasn't fit for purpose and gave me a Desire to replace it Very Happy I swore I'd never go near Samsung anything again.
But then along came the sgs2 and it was SO good I had no choice.
Am I right in thinking the 8500 is a Bada phone? In which case it's unsurprising that it's shit tbh. there really are only two (three if you want to be nice to Microsoft) phone OS choices these days.

Yes, its a Bada phone mate.
God knows what i was thinking when i chose it (was nearly 2 years ago).

It sounds like HTC might be the way to go then.
To be honest i'm not really one for downloading lots of apps or playing games. The most i will use it for (apart from speaking to people and texting) will be listening to music and sat nav.

But if the apps are there i will probably play.
