Hi,
Im looking at buying a motorbike, its a 1997 Virago. Guy gave me mot and reg so i did MOT test history.
The guy said the bloke he bought it off had it off the road for a few years as he became too old to ride it.
Doing MOT history check, it only has this years MOT on the database, which it passed a month ago, however it got adviseries:

Front Roller brake test indicates slight fluctuation of brake effort (3.3.A1d)

Front Roller brake test Higher brake efficiency normally obtainable. (3.3.A2b)

Asked the seller about these, and he said the MOT place informed him that this is due to the bike being stood for a long time.
True or BS? He said if the pads were knackered it would fail MOT.
Am i being too skeptical or should i walk away?

Sticky calliper pistons due to having been sat is plausible. At worst case callipers off and to be rebuilt with new seals isn't an immensely expensive job.

I got those advisories on both brakes on the old NSR 125. The bike was breaking fine. Nothing too serious in my case, probably just do with a clean and bleed.

Hi

Fluctuation suggests a disk slightly misshapen. Ie, possibly slightly warped. More likely if mild some pad residue on the disk (ie, where the pad has covered the disk while parked up).

As to the higher efficiency expected, again possibly down to pads contaminated (rust from the disks if parked up for ages).

All the best

Keith

Cheap fix would be to whip the calipers off, pump the pistons right out and clean them, put them back in.
Bit of emery cloth, de-glaze/reface the pads, and maybe run it around the discs too, to remove any rust from where it's been stood.

Copperease the pads (Where they sit in the carrier of course), and grease the caliper sliders if they have any (Single / twin pot slider type).

Run fresh fluid through the system too for a fresh bleed.

And see how you get on.

If it still hasnt cured it, then it's almost certainly a warped / mishapen disc.

And probably closer to £300 for one from the bikes maker.

All the best
