Hey all,

I used to do these things on my ped a few years back no prob, however since this one is my first big bike I ve always been hesitant to touch it (other than electrics where I know what I am doing).

I am quite fed up though having to pay loads to get the simplest things done.

I am just wondering when you adjust your chain do you guys use torque wrenches and stuff to get the spindle tightened again, or just give a good tightening with normal wrench?

I am just unsure which parts on the bike are actually required to be at xNm and which ones can be just "tight".

Would a torque wrench be a good investment since i don't intend to start fiddling with engine parts just yet.

Cheers

Personally, I just use a standard ratchet and a bit of wanking power, however I'd be more inclined to follow the recommended torque specifications if I were working on bike such as an R6 or greater.

On my R1, I just batter the axle nut up with my Gun. 240/250nm or so?
Probably way too tight, but meh, it wont come undone. Thumbs Up

It wont come undone but an overtightend axle nut will nip the bearings up too tight and eventually lead to failure if your lucky you will catch them before they collapse and weld the outer race to the bearing face of the wheel Sad ,always torque up to recomended settings they are there for a reason Thumbs UpA £30 torque wrench is worth its weight in gold and will save you no end of time and swearing and cursing after snapping steel bolts off in ally fittings etc Thumbs Up

Not really... That's what the internal spacers are for. And contrary to belief, a torque wrench isn't worth its weight in shit unless it's calibrated regularly, which any home wrench won't be.
I'd never use one on something like a wheel spindle, or even any bike with less than 3 cylinders.

And how would you do it? just tighten as much as possible? I am thinking of getting a Tq-wrench and maybe give it a bit more with a regular wrench

I've never bothered with a torque wrench. Tighten up till if feels right.....not as tight as possible unless you want to strip and mangle all your fixings Smile

My tw gets calibrated every 2 years which for me is far less than the 5000 cycles recomendation,I always torque up as per manual specs and have been for er lets just say many moons prefering to go with how the manufacturer recomends things to be done, and in er many many moons Wink of restoring ,building fighters ,customs and race bikes, it hasnt let me down ,but as the saying goes'each to their own ' and all that Thumbs Up
