Sometimes clutchless upshift, as long as you don't do it wrong (it's easy to do, bit of upwards pressure on the gear changer, release the throttle a bit and then put it back on at the same time as more pressure on gear changer) and will have less general wear on the bike than changing using the clutch. DOn't do clutchless down shift, much harder and much more likely to go wrong and do expensive damage.
Kryptix, copying pasting random crap isn't the idea of the karma system stopping you posting short posts if you piss it off, so unless you want your karma level to continue falling it might be worth stopping that. |

I agree with Kryptix, in a way anyway.
The clutch is designed to be used, it's easier to change gear with it and obviously required for down shifting. It's teached at CBT riding schools and is clearly designed to be used in order to ride. Fact.
People who clutchless upshift are doing so because that's what they prefer, or that it's quicker or maybe easier for some people.
There is no right or wrong so no need to argue over it, it's what people prefer.
Personally, on the R6 I always use the clutch. The WR I normally mix both, sometimes I clutch sometimes I don't, country lanes I generally don't bother with the clutch and obviously for wheelying it's clutchless too...
IMO neither is right nor wrong, people can do what they find easiest/most suited to the riding they do/are doing at the time. ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Allot of different gear boxes on allot of different bikes, generally i use the clutch, upshifting it will do fine down is bit tricky (i'm not happy with doing it anyway) clutch sets are what £40 at the most? a new gearbox? eh... i dread to think (and thats assumeing your doing it yourself!)
I do blip the throttle on down changes, apart from sounding cool it matches the speed of the engine to the wheels better, which in more powerfull bike will save you haveing a locked wheel, otherwise is better for the engine... ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

I made the mistake of clutchless shifting from 1st - 2nd off the lights only to realise it bounced into neutral - lesson learnt, always use the clutch form 1st - 2nd, from then on, depending on the revs, i either clutchless shift or 1/2 clutch it up the gearbox. In my opinion, 1/2 clutches are much smoother than some clutchless shifts, and i have a conscious satsifying feeling that i'm not harming the gearbox (but if i get it spot on, clutchless shift is really sweet). Plus, it's sounds nicer with a 1/2 or clutchless shift - you get that "click" sound, quite similar to some guy an a skyline with a quick shifter! . However, try to always use the clutch when running in (if mine has buggered up, i'll try to get it replaced under warranty ) - Oh and ALWAYS use the clutch when going down REGARDLESS of any other school of thought one may have. ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

Passengers can get thrown around if you get a change wrong when not using the clutch, so I do use the clutch as it is smoother, when I have a passenger.

I disagree entirely with that statement, when you do a clutchless change, the progression of power from one gear to another is considerably smoother, you just silde it through rather than totally disconnecting the power then re-engaging it like you do with a clutched gearshift.
This is what I do for a silky-smooth gearchange with a pillion:
Put a little pressure on the gear lever, ease the throttle closed a bit and as I do so start to pull the clutch in. When the clutch starts to slip, the revs rise slightly and the gear lever just slides into the next gear with no effort. I then feed the power in as I let the clutch back out in the normal way. This involves a very small amount of clutch movement (maybe 1/4 of the travel of the lever) and sounds like a car with an automatic gearbox changing over, when done properly, the pillion passenger will be unaware you have even changed gear. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink.
