Hi Guys

First post here, been reading for a while though.

I'm thinking of purchasing a CBF125 to use as a commuter, I've had a R125 before, GS500, Gilera Runner 180 and now have a thundercat.

CBF125 attracts me a lot because of the mpg and the price of insurance is so little.

I'll be giving up my car for this, I can afford to run it, I just can't justify not saving the money by commuting on a bike again.

Not really up for commuting on the thundercat, while it's a great bike the mpg lets it down.

Also I'm open to new suggestions. Doesn't have to be capable of motorway journeys as I can't imagine any 125 would be really economical at full chat.

Hi

what sort of commute is it you have? Road types? Distance?

A CBF will have some pretty good mpg and keep the running costs down, but have you checked insurance etc as some smaller engine bikes are more expensive than say your average parallel twin be ause they attract the learner premium. Might be worth checking.

I have a CBF, good little bikes! Smile the MPG on Honda's website is slightly... optimistic, but I still get 220 out of its 13 liter tank Smile

If you can afford the purchase price, don't sell the car. My bandit (at 50-55mpg) saves about £750 in petrol over a year against commuting in my car (30mpg)... so that pays for the fuel I'd have bought anyway, insurance, tax, servicing etc... basically, once I'd bought it, it's free to run... and a bike Wink

Urgh. My GPz305 cost less to insure than my 125, and the 500 was a £0 policy swap for it.

OP, have you thought about a 250? The mpg won't be much less, consumables will be essentially the same and an older 250 is likely to have better build quality and reliability than a CBF125 - they're really not carving out a good name for themselves round these parts.

Resale value will likely drop after the licensing changes next year, but buy cheap and it won't have far to fall. And that's only a consideration if you're not planning to run it into the ground anyway.

What 250s should I be looking at?

The major saving for me would be £200 a year insurance rather than £1400 in the car. 80ish mpg instead of 45ish and 6 pence a liter cheaper fuel.

Then 16 a year tax instead of 200.
