My bike does exactly the same. Although the only difference is it'll sort itself out if i touch the front brake then the lights work again.
Got no idea what it is. Effort to check over the wiring system hidden beneath friggin everything.  |

Just out of curiosity but does pulling your front break leaver effect the headlights atall?
Thoughts on the issue though is the Regulator.
When the Regulator goes on the NSR you may find that revving the engine will cause it to give out less power and therefore in the dark, facing a wall, bring the engine from idle up to 6-8k and back down. If the headlights dim as the engine RPM rises then the reg/stator is likely to be on its way out.
