Recently bought a zzr600 1995 and i took it out for a test run, at 5-6krpm it just splutters and dies. Very annoying.

I've cleaned the carbs out, checked all the jets, the rocket valve, all that sort of stuff.
There is fuel going through from what I can tell. No kinks in the piping...

What's the best thing to do here? Ht leads/caps/plugs?

anyone got an idea? Or suffered with the same problem?

Have you checked your filters, including the inline fuel filter?

Slutters and dies?
Test battery if you have cleaned the carbs out.

If fuel is getting through i would be looking into the sparking side of the circuit. So battery 1st,, how old is it? Do you have 12.6 volts? Is the charging system working?

Then test the HT leads, coils,, change the plugs.

Oh and dont forget to clean out the breather pipe on the fuel tank. Thumbs Up

cheers but how would a battery affect it at higher revs? Confused It's a brand new motobatt battery... it's pukka.

I'll replace the filters next and see what happens. Any other suggestions in the meantime?

how would i test the leads? Cheers.

A weak battery will break down under more load. Thus making the spark weaker. Thumbs Up

First thing I'd do is swap the plugs & air filter. They're service items anyway (a service should be the first job on any new bike) and then allow you to continue troubleshooting safely assuming they're ok.

It's amazing just how often a decent service sorts out problems.

Yeah will do. If it makes any odds it revvs up fine in neutral/ with clutch in. Or even in gear on the centre stand.

Hi

From experience the ZZR is sensitive to non charging, and will barely run without plenty of charge in the battery.

However how long has it been standing / has it been running recently? Does it have a Micron exhaust? They tend to cause a flat spot around 5k or so, and possibly in need of the carbs cleaning out that might be bad enough to stop it running further. Also check the condition of the diaphragms.

All the best

Keith

Hiya the battery has shitloads of charge! It's a proper good battery in there atm.

I checked those diaphram things they seemed perfect. No nicks or anything.

Exhausts are standard, but it is blowing on the downpipe quite a bit. Theres a gash just over an inch long. Would this really cause odd running? I mean it's a SERIOUS bogging I'm getting.

Already cleaned the carbs. Jets, pilot jets, the passages behind them, rocket needle, etc etc.

Cheers.

The 'E' models came with 'Ram air' induction, a couple of inlet pipes/ plenum chambers from the front of the fairing and a carb pressurisation pipe into the floats. Completely innefective and a royal pain in the bum when servicing. If either of these items is disloged or leaky then it gives rise to poor running.... especially around 5K when you hit speeds above 30 - 40 MPH.
The easiest cure is to remove the pipes into the front of the airbox and block he frame tube holes (tops from spray paint cans are good). Then remove the tapered palstic pipe with the four small rubber pipes into the carbs. (Leave the small rubber pipes in place).
Then see how it runs and report back.

Cheers

Right well now it splutters in neutral! Can only guess this is because I've just recently fitted restrictors. Rolling Eyes I've got no idea why.. I thought it would still revv freely..

I swapped out the ht leads for new ones, and they all spark nicely. I'm going to fit new spark plugs soon I think see how this works out.

Otherwise got no idea what it could be. Probably not the restrictors... But it refuses to rev over 5-6krpm. I did have quite a large gash in the downpipes though just after they come out of the head. Would this cause said problems?
