I was wondering if the Gilera DNA is any good as im having quite alot of trouble looking for a 50cc motocross bike that is road legal(well motocross style bike anyways.)
There seems to be quite allot of DNA's in bike trader and my local bargin pages.
I was just wondering if i should sacrifice the motocross style for a DNA.

Having heard of lots of problems with engines and electrics on them. I say steer clear of them.

I am sure you could find a decent DT50 or TS50 on loot or Adtrader quite cheaply.

Either get yourself a ped, or get yourself a 50cc geared bike. Don't get a ped which is trying to look like a bike.

Getting something with gears will mean when you're 17 you're already capable of using them easily and will mean less to ensure you know before your test. Also get a cheaper one (not more than £800 really) as it is very very likely to get dropped when learning on it, so spend more than that and the money is thrown away as the value of expensive mint bikes is affected lots when the bike is scuffed etc, but on a cheap old geared 50cc bike it won't really make a difference.

As Craig says look on Ad Trader and Loot for DT50's and TS50's, there are a fair number around. Thumbs Up

There seems to be a lot of assumtions floating around on this - and other bike - forums.

Just because a mate of a friend of a cousin etc etc rode a bike, and it fell apart, doesnt mean that all the bikes made by that company do!

I mean, take my Peugeot Prost: Worked fine as anything, ran well, no problems.
Day I buy, it conked out.
Needed new Carb Float, 6 new clutch weights, and a whole new clutch inner before it would run again. £206 on repairs before I even sat on it.

I have yet to find anyone else who has had problems like that on a Prost.

I say, look round. IF you can find several different places all saying the same thing, chances are it really is a problem with the range, and you should indeed steer clear.

Exactly. Any bike will break when not looked after correctly (trust me, they do Laughing), and if you look after a bike well then it shouldn't have any real problems.

Look more at service history and general condition rather than milage, if it's high milage and been looked after it's a better buy than low milage bike which has been abused.

i loved my gilera dna when i got it, it is a bit dull now though but pretty sharpish up 2 40mph, good handling, more stable than a scooter but does push the front wheel into the ground when braking sharpish, i would check for:

- helmet box hinges, if they are oiled, as they seem to go rusty and snap off

- automatic clutch box has been known to be faulty on some

- look out for leaky coolant bottles (inside the helmet box thingy), most leak a little but some leak quite a lot

- be aware that most of the parts are italian made so trying to fix anything would be difficult as every diagram is in italian and haynes have only just brought out a workshop manual (bit hard to get though)

- check the spark plug for the rubber seal if you go see one, otherwise it causes them to short circuit

- most come with a gilera service thingy so check the book

if you can find a good looking one and check for no problems then get it dont listen to the ppl here who have never had one as a first bike

I've ridden a DNA belonging to the new ped-bois at my college and i must say it feels okay. It's good for 35mph (because he hasn't done his 1000mile service for derestriction). However, with a DNA, you do tend to get that "ped boi" image more than any other ped in my opinion. There are 2 DNA's in my college car park, one is in pristine condition, the other has been crashed - mirrors used as crash bungs (rotated 90 degrees to teh plane of view, so it's facing the riders ears! Rolling Eyes ). If you want to get a DNA, just follow Simon's advice, but to be honest with you, it didn't feel much different to my NRG which i thought was a far more practical bike and nicer handling. But hell if you want to get a DNA, get one, it's your choice and i do hope you have a pleasant time on it regardless of how others perceive the bike !
