Hi I'm new to BCF, and wanting to get a supermoto, I'm guessing there have been plenty of "what's the best 125" questions before but I'll be a bit more specific. Smile

- must be 2 stroke
- preferably Japanese
- not Chinese
- learner legal but tunable
- reasonable insurance costs
- reasonable reliability as far as 2 strokes are concerned
- cost less than £1500

As far as I can see, a DT125X ticks all of those boxes. But I'm considering all options.

I keep getting told Aprilia MX is a good choice, as well as the KTM EXC, but I'm not convinced.

I've also been thinking about a project, like an older DT125 restoration/supermoto conversion, or even a motocross to supermoto conversion (YZ 125 for example) but they seem like a lot of work and effort with registering them etc... and then there's the question of insurance.

Also if it helps, I have four years driving experience (cars) but no experience with bikes.

I see nothing but good reviews about the DT125, so not too sure why I should be looking at anything else but want to make sure I haven't missed anything. Smile

Would say DT125X would be a good choice

They are reliable, would need less maintenance than a KTM 125 or even an RX125.

Whether to buy one to do up or a "project" depends on how much you enjoy working on bikes, and how quickly you'd like to get on the road.

The DT is the only real factory japanese choice. Nice enough bike for a 125 SM, and has lots of modification potential and parts interchangability from other Yamaha's for example.

The 2stroke 125SM catagory is quite a small specialised market, in that there are not that many choices out there. The important thing is to get a clean and well looked after bike, and possibly seconded by being able to get spares quicly and easily. there are some beautiful SM bikes out there that they don't make anymore, but trying to get parts would be extremely difficult for.
KTM Sting, Gilera Freestyle etc are just two examples.

If you see a nice condition Aprillia MX or SX125 or a Cagiva Supercity or a Husqvarna SM125S, then all of these would be as good as a DTX, but as i said it's finding a nice clean and looked after one thats the important bit. The chances are there will still be some nice DTX's about, im not sure about the other's?
