CG125 not starting..

Hiya everyone

I own a CG125 (2005) with an electric starter.

I went away whilst it was being MOT'd and the mechanic parked it up for me in my usual spot (he didn't drive it). I've just come back to find I cannot start the bike... ffs.

I noticed the fuel tap had been left on and the choke up so i guessed at first that the engine was flooded (btw i'm a complete novice at this so forgive me if my logic is flawed), turned both off and gave it a few turns then came back the next morning with a fully charged battery.

Still can't get it to start with or without choke. I've tried jump starting it in 2nd gear too.

I've checked:

Bike is definitely ticking over so i think the starter motor is OK.
Battery is good.
Spark plug seems OK, i rested it against the engine and it sparks, although i noticed a light black colour over it?? A new one is on the way regardless.
Air filter is clean.


I'm not sure where else to go from here.. advice would be highly appreciated. I feel like i must be missing something obvious but am perplexed.. if the mechanic was doing his job properly all of these things should have already been looked at very recently, no?

did the garage do any work on the bike? If its just an MoT then the rest of the bike shouldn't been touched.

It working before its MoT? Ring up the garage and ask why your bike doesn't start, it was in their possession as a working bike, it comes out dead.

It may not be their fault, but have you used this garage before? I know of garages who are just on the sly, pulling something so that you have a problem. So you ring the garage and book in costing you more ££££. I have never trusted garages.

Anyway on the other hand having a weak battery can cause starting problems. Odd that you can't bump start it.

Next course of action would be to change the spark plug and go from there.

Yup the garage did nothing but the MOT...i will call them monday, but am very suspicious. Having said it's hard to believe they would do something quite so obvious.

The battery is only a year old so i find it hard to believe it's kaput..i don't have a meter around otherwise i'd test it's output.

Am waiting on the new plug and will update this post once i have it...what does the black, slightly oily colour signify? It wasn't clear to me from websites i looked at..

Spark plug goes sooty from using choke making bike run rich .try taping carb with back of screw driver make sure float needle not stuck closed from sitting also clean soot off plug because it won't help get a good spark.

New plug came shortly after last message.

I had a little head scratch because the plug end was different (bulb type thing)...until i realised you could unscrew it..doh .

Anyway, ive changed it out but still no joy . I also did as usher suggested and tapped the carb but this seems to have had no effect.

I might go out and buy a new battery, i've run it down a couple of times now out of sheer frustration and had to recharge it, is that bad for it??

Also:

I read that when replacing the spark plug, all you needed to do was twist as far as poss with fingers then give it half a turn with the tool.

That seems very loose... ?

I'm no expert, but i had a similar situation.
I left my bike for a long time with fuel line on and the carb got flooded with petrol and wasnt draining properly. this also made my spark plug look oily jsut as you said, but turned out it was a petroly, sooty sort of mix.

I turned fuel line off, undid the draining screw on the float bowl of the carb, left it for a few hours to completely drain of petrol, cleaned spark plug, turned fuel line on and turned it over with started motor for about half a minute while fiddling with the choke and it got going.
