PostPosted: 19:51 - 02 Aug 2011    Post subject: Piaggio Zip 125 - Slow, Juddery Start Reply with quote

Hi all,
Problems started on Saturday. When I am starting the scooter, or come to a stop while going along, it starts shaking quite heavily. Really juddery.

When I go to set off, it is really slow, and takes about 6 - 9 seconds to pick up speed. Once it does, it's absolutely fine, and runs as normal, It's just when setting off or coming to a stop.

This is a real problem at traffic lights and in slow traffic, and I've had to stop riding as a result of it.

Does anyone know what might be the problem? I really need this thing to get to work!

Thanks in advance!

I presume you havent changed or adjusted anything?

It sounds asthough it's running rich. The easiest thing to check is that the air filter is clean and dry, hopefully that'll solve it. However it could also be that the warmer air is making it run rich as the air is denser.

Haven't changed anything at all, it just started while I was on my way to work one morning. Will have a clean out of the filter and report back! Meanwhile any other thoughts welcome!

Hello,
I had carb problems recently and during my search on the net I found something that might help you:

https://scootrs.com/tech.cfm?tip=tunecarb

Your problem sounds like 'rich jetting symptons and solutions' 2 in the list: problems starting, afterwards ok. I'm not sure if the needle is the main cause of the problem as the list suggests though. For example I had gurgling (under 3) problems, but it turned out it was probably a stuck choke switch not anything suggsted in that list.

Seb

it sounds more like your CVT pulley system drive belt and/or the rollers are worn out

As above, I was thinking either the throttle cable developed a fault (like it stretched) or the belt/pulley's got a problem.

Take the case off and see what condition it's all in. Then post pics..

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I have the same problem.. There is a huge lack of info on the 125 Zip.

Can someone tell me how to check the rollers and belt?

I've just bought the bike secondhand and it's always been like it, at start up it's rough and runs out to a stall. When it's cold there is a real lack of acceleration, almost like it's 'missing'.

I've checked the air filter and there is a hole in the cover but I don't think that's the real problem. I'm going to replace it though.

Any suggestions or solutions to the original post which may help
me.

Thanks

Your rollers are worn out, this is a classic symptom!
Slow juddery acceleration as the rollers get squared off and will not roll freely up and down the variator. You will need a variator holding tool, tenner off ebay, take off the left side engine case, screw the holding tool up against the variator (front pulley) remove the nut, take it off and look at your rollers. I bet they are squared off, £10 for a new set and you're back on the road. Sorted, 15 minute job.

Excellent, thanks for that. I have the tool and a new set of rollers as I anticapated that maybe the problem.

Can't work out how the tool fits onto the variator though?

OK, rollers replaced but how do I get the belt back on? It seems too wide and too short? It was the same belt that was on there before roller replacement..

I thought I done it but heard a right bloody racket from the variator part..

Have you put the rollers in the correct way round and are they all in the right place?
To fit the belt you put it over the clutch pulley first and then onto the variator then you fit the part of the variator with the teeth on (for the electric start) then refit the crankshaft nut.

Maybe I'm just to cheap and Scottish to buy anything I don't need to, but I found a ratchet with 2 trolley jack bars on the handle (made it about 4 foot long) and a bloody good grip on the belt between the variator and clutch assembly was enough to crack the bolt loose...

OK, here is the problem... The Variator fan goes back on but doesn't leave enough room for the shim, kick start washer and nut to get back on. The kick start washer has groves to slide onto the spline of the variator pin but the fan prevents the fan going back far enough??? It needs to slide back about another 2mm or 3mm

https://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m604/26tm399/P1050319.jpg

When I tried it with the side case off the variator fan bolt came loose and the noise was dreadful, like the fan is too tight in the variator.

So you're saying you cant push the pulley with teeth on far enough back because of the belt?

What you need to do is pull the right hand pulleys apart you will be pulling against a spring so it will be difficult. Then get someone else to pull the belt tight and fit the left hand pulley and bolt it all up. Once everything is torqued up correctly spin the back wheel by hand and the belt will sort itself out!

Thanks so much.

OK, I'll give it go... I think!

Any idea of torque settings?

The variator needs to be at 40NM also apply a small amount of loctite.

When you pull the clutch pulley apart basically you pull the outside pulley towards you Thumbs Up

Yes that is correct, i think you can just see in your picture the coil spring between B and C that you have to pull against.

OK, all back together. It worked out getting the belt on a treat. Yet to run her up though. What's the torque for the clutch end?

Oh, and is locktite needed in clutch bolt>?

Thanks

Gald it worked Thumbs Up

For the clutch tighten the nut to 45NM and add some loctite. Also once its back together spin the back wheel just to make sure everything moves freely before you start it up.

All done... Thanks for all the time and patience...

For completeness it still runs really rough, no throttle response and if you give the throttle too much it splutters to a stall... Brick Wall Brick Wall

I've added a Youtube clip:

Any further suggestion is most welcome though I feel I'll have to start a new thread!

Ahhhhhhhh! Sick

Does the bike have any performance parts eg. exhaust? And what colour is the spark plug?
