Once again, woken up at 5am by toothache. Was due to have a root filling on Friday but they phoned me up day before and had to move the appointment 3 weeks ahead Rolling Eyes Probably the first time in my life I've been disappointed over a cancelled dentist appointment. Apparently the root in my tooth infected, and the nerves are dying off, so there's always a constant pain there. Pain killers do naff all usually, dentist even said since the nerves dying theres no way to get the meds to the area of pain or something like that. Anyone got a pair of plyers they can lend me? Twisted Evil Or some fishing line and a door...

Been there, have numerous T shirts.

I take it you've tried the dab it with toothpaste technique, the swill your mouth around with cool or tepid water technique (neat vodka also), the dissolve a soluble aspirin on it technique etc.

You can't really do fuck all about it, except not eat or drink (as that will set it off) and get what little sleep you can. Dentists and the medical profession don't give a shit and legally you can't get anything decent as a painkiller.

A mate of mine recommends rubbing the gum with coke(-aine) as it'll numb it for a while, but you might end up with a habit. Matthew Perry ended up with a Vicodin addiction after a similar infection. Human teeth are obsolete when face with the modern diet.

Funny thing is he done all those tests, including whacking each tooth with his prodding tool and nothing really showed up. Then he did an x-ray and that's how he found it.

I went for an emergency appointment before Christmas and another dentist did a filling on the same tooth, which sort of helped for a few months, but now it's worse. Root canal or extraction, and the root canal only keeps the tooth going for 10 years max apparently, then I suppose it just comes out or breaks away Confused

40% alcohol is standard. Also Whiskey is no good as it has a strong flavour. If it lasts more than a good few days you will get royally fucked off with it, especially if it's a cheap brand, it all ended up tasting like Brazil nuts to me. Put me off any whisky for ages. Vodka has no real taste or odor so is a better idea.

If the hospital dentist is anything like MRI, they'll shoot you up with loads of novocaine, stick a dressing on it, then tell you to take paracetamols and go to a proper dentist. When the numbness wears off it'll hurt worse than it did before. Emergency dentists don't give a fuck unless you're signed up with them.

I had a root canal then the tooth snapped off leaving a nasty looking thing, so I had a metal crown fitted

Metal teeth ftw Thumbs Up

Hurt like a cunt when it was infected though and stunk too, and was swollen, it was proper nasty and painful, went to a private dentist and got some antibiotics which got me out of pain until the surgery, cost £50 but the NHS dentist wasn't available for 2 whole months

If there's one thing that can turn an atheist to prayer it's intense toothache Crying or Very sad Thumbs Down

I think it's free for me, I've got an NHS exemption form to say I have to pay NHS prices (and not over a certain amount based on income) and all that but I think she typed the wrong thing in the computer because they never charge me Laughing It's a proper posh dentist practise as well, there's only one NHS dentist left in there.

Suitor-stu (on here, who's a Dentist) recommended Sensodyne - and for me it turns out the normal marketing BS I ignored did have some legitimacy. Possibly not sorting out the level of pain you have, but for me just brushing with it removed the pain I had.

Clove oil was what I used last time I had intolerable toothache. It tastes dreadful but if I put some on cotton wool and stuck it into the cavity, after the initial increased pain of actually putting it in there, it did ease the pain a bit.

I also found that I could only stand, evenly on both feet. Anything else (sitting, lying down, shifting my weight to one side a bit) increased my blood pressure slightly which doubled the pain. So while I was waiting a few days for my appointment (this was in Texas) I tended to just stand there.

Incidentally, just to set some expectations, the root canal surgery I had to fix that particular toothache was the most harrowing experience of my life. The tooth was too infected for the anaesthetic to take when he injected my gum, so he was sticking his syringe directly into the root (agony), injecting it (more agony), waiting for it to numb the root and then drilling until he hit nerve that the anaesthetic hadn't got to (again, agony) and starting the process again.

Ironically (to some extent) they couldn't save the tooth and I had it extracted a couple of weeks later, after visiting a "root canal specialist" in the meantime who also failed. Apparently my root was "too curvy".

For the sake of balance, I've had at least one other root canal that was a breeze.

I bet they pay him to say that Laughing It feels that way from the advert anyway. Brushing doesn't hurt but rinsing with water afterwards feels like hitting the tooth with a hammer Shocked

I did question that I think Razz - but do know him "in person" and this was mentioned while lazing about with a beer at Glastonbury Festival Smile.

I was still a bit sceptical, but it definitely did work for me (and very rare that Placebos do, so probably is something to it.) I haven't tried rubbing some on my gum or anything.

Of course, a bit expensive but the traditional remedy was cocaine - rub a little into the gum there and reckon it'll definitely sort it. But some other issues with it's use these days.

That shit is horrible!
I used so much of it when I was in agony, it was more the distracting burning mouth full of saliva that helped the pain.

Shit's weird... dont get it on your lips!

I never understood why I should go by a dentist's recommendation when choosing a toothpaste. Y'know, a dentist, who gets more work the worse condition my teeth are in. It's like asking a freelance wheel-clamper where I should park.

I haven't had a tooth abcess (yet, I've got plenty of fillings so no doubt will at some point), but would baby teething cream be worth a shot? It contains lignocaine/lidocaine which is one of the anathetics dentists use.

Wimps

As I write mother is at the dentist having one tooth extracted and one root filling. She has had toothache for 2 weeks now. This was the fist appointment possible. She will drive round to my house on her way back (yes, she is still driving) and will no doubt tell me all the details.

Mother is 94
