It's a bit of a mystery what they're trying to push, the gifs seem to be hosed.

Probably some sort of experimental bot that infiltrates and builds post count to make them look like a legit reader then bam, before you know it you get an email from Raymond Griffith and you're posting threads asking if cashing a cheque for £900 is safe Thumbs Up

Had dozens of these over the last few weeks which I have deleted and banned (and no doubt G has done a few as well). Think possibly some better anti spam registration mod is needed.

All the best

Most CAPTCHAs are now solved by (cheap) human effort, at which point a spammer has a valid login which can be used with a bot. Only way to get around that would be to randomly re-request a CAPTCHA solve when making a post, but I suspect doing that would piss people off too much...

These seem to come out, after a while at least, as a 1px .gif.
In some cases being redirected a few times first.

I wonder if it's either trying to find a browser vulnerability, or maybe even just collecting IP data for whatever reason.

An insta-ban if a user's first post attracts SPAM ratings might not be beyond the pale. It'd nail a few legitimate posters, but likely not many that we'd actually miss.

Half-considering adding an "all user-posted links and signatures on BCF have rel=nofollow on them, so there is *zero* SEO benefit of trying to link your website here in any way" notice to the first time a new account starts posting a message.

Certainly I'd like to see maybe that posts are hidden and require authorisation from a moderator if the first posts garner spam ratings.

Combination of a few random questions that would be obvious to bike people on registration, and maybe validating the email address / ip address / user name against a list of known spammers. Even better if we could flag up these spammers to add them to such lists.

All the best

If that were an accurate indicator, you'd be reading this on Visordown.

Just had another one do it in this thread Laughing.

Anyway, did some googling and it turns out it's an IE9 exploit which doesn't work in Firefox or Chrome - in IE apparently it is just spam, rather than something more nefarious.

Maybe quite clever, even if not intentionally as IE users tend to be less tech-savvy (and this.)

Hi

Can't really find anything on that exploit. Any pointers?

All the best

I searched for 'forum spam blank image'.

Clicked the first link which took me to another forum.
Unfortunately since yesterday it would seem they have set it up to require registration.

However as I type, it's still in the google cache, here.
