Got her indoors a Zip 50 a few weeks back, SHe HATES IT. So I remember my mum having an FZ50 for years and years (shame she still aint got it), and she loved it, so she pursuaded the wife to get one of them, or should I say "For me to get one of them"...

Again anyone can buy one going, but wheres the fun in that...

So true to form and £34 poorer, one Suzy

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/snap2.jpg

Yep looks a wreck, and someone has removed the side cover and not put it back, but hey lets get on...

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/snap4.jpg

Looks like they removed the kick start and return spring and nothing else (well at least nothing else seems to be missing). Last night I pulled the engine out of the frame, well thats a lie, I lifted the frame OFF the engine....

Going to strip this one right down (both frame and engine), already need Exhaust (that was also missing), and kickstart but the rest is remarkably ok under all that crap. Paint needs to be removed from the frame, but no rust, just paint peeling off.

The engine turns over (with borrowed kickstart from CF70) with bags of compression, and plug is a lovely brown, so looks promissing.

Not bad for £34! Now buy a pit bike engine and turbo it...

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at anything on Fleabay by now, but this takes the bickie

I need an exhaust and a cover, and thought great heres a NOS one on Fleabay, till I check the bids a few days later Shocked

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/muf.jpg

OK, I guess idiots think this is the VERY LAST one in the World?

Well it AINT Laughing CMSNL have lots in stock, and for a lot less than that one..

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/muf2.jpg

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/muf3.jpg

Guess where I ordered mine from ?

Bit of a no brainer, CMSNL are excellent (tons of new parts for the CD175 rebuild have come from them), with cheap trackable delivery, and NO IMPORT DUTY, just added it to the other parts I needed for the CD and the FZ (oil cap etc), so about £12 NOT £31 with 3 days left!!!!!!! Idea Mr. Green Mr. Green

Maybe I should buy a few more Razz

For future reference, although cmsnl is great for finding parts and part numbers, Robinson's Foundry is far faster for actual delivery, and is based in the UK. Not any significant difference in price either, insofar as I can tell.

I love how the exhaust cover is worth almost what you paid for the bike, but looks like you got a good bargain.

Thanks, good call, ordered the exhaust from them today.

Meanwhile onwards and inwards.

Took the generator/alternator cover off.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0592.jpg

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0594.jpg

Looks far worse than it is, sure some water has sat in here, and rust has built up between the parts, but to be honest its nothing a wipe with some emery wont put right.

This is the first view of the piston, looks wet, luckilly it looks and smells like oil, so Suzy has probably been laying on her side for a while, again first impression of the piston and bore is very good.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0593.jpg

Heres a view of the transmission, shows the rust, BUT everything works, both clutches, drive chain and kick start, amazing, and once its put back together and full of oil what rust is remaining (after I've cleaned each part) will not be an issue.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0595.jpg

Heres the carb as it came off

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0597.jpg

And after a shots of my favorite cleaner

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0602.jpg

Again here is the oil pump as I took it off

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0599.jpg

And again a few minutes later

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0601.jpg

Tonight I will strip down the carb and clean it out, I wont touch the oil pump over than a wipe over with WD40.

Meanwhile I've pulled the rear wheel apart, rubbed and wire brushed the rim and put the first coat of Hamerite Smooth Silver, looks a lot better already.

It needs a new exhaust..... Hmmmm.... I WONDER..... would Gianelli make an expansion chamber for one of these things.... wonder if something of a speed-fighter could be persuaded to fit..... Bore LOOKS OK.... but I better take it off, JUST to be sure... Hmmm......those ports look a bit wheenie.... where's the dremmel?

DARLING! SLOW DOWN! Benley dont go that fast! Laughing

This is SORT of how it's gone with Snowie's 'Pup'! And I DO rather have nightmared that having got a TAD carried away, and having collected half the bits to build her suped-up-super-dream engine, that ought to be able to nose a score of ponies... she will be leaving me rather behind on the DT!

Last night I pulled off the two wheels (this is the front)

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0609.jpg

URGH, rusty or what ?, first step strip it down

One minging, hairy (yes HAIR), corroded hair (I think its been near horses, it smells like it!!!), and check out those splits in the tyre wall !!!! WOW. Someone told me tyres only have an expected life of about 3 years, after that they perish and split (unless being used).

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0610.jpg

First job wire brush that rim down, then scotchbrite, then fine wet and dry (dry), till smooth, then wash over with meths. The hub I did with the dremmel and a copper wire wheel, and lots of love. finally the rim was treated with jenolite (cure rust), followed by more rubbing, and then painted (hand) with Hamerite Smooth Silver.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0611.jpg

Now on with the rear, similar job (I think they look alright ?)

A bit more?

I've brought the handlebar switches in-doors, and started buzzing out the switches and connections, EVERY switch was faulty, inc the horn and the brake light switches (guess its where its sat for years).

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0612.jpg

However dont be daunted by what looks like some strange black magic, the way I see it is "what have you got to loose" it aint working anyway, and besides if someone in Japan put these together then I know they will come apart and with luck go back as well. Heres just one of the switches (Brake light).

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0613.jpg

Now have EVERY switch working 100%, so gave the controls a quick polish, and now there ready to be put to one side.

FYI, back in the 80's when Fluke was just starting to take the electronics industry by storm, the sales rep came to call, and I asked just how indestructable they were and if the claims were half true?
He walked out to the car park, and threw the damn thing about 100yrds straight up, and down it came, CRASH, I picked it up, and hardly a scratch, and the buttons and display (LCD was new stuff then) still worked, he then took it off me, and threw it again, this time he went over to his car and drove over the thing, four times!! I ordered 16 of them on the spot. Often wonder though were did the retired Avo-8's go we lobbed in the store room?

Heyyyyy, I had one of those bought for my 16th birthday...after being promised a motorbike... yeah you can imagine the words that came out of my mouth as I found one of those in the shed on the morning of my birthday... Silence

Anyway, it's what I had for the next year, and I made the most of it.

When I laid on it, "yes that's what I said", laid on the seat, feet tucked over the indicator stalks...it would do 44mph downhill!!! I even got told off for speeding through my village by the local cop. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

My mum (78yrs) was telling me she had a Suzy back in 1980's and the only time it ever let her down was when it ran out of fuel, which she says was her fault, as she just FORGOT as she only filled it up once in a blue moon, (and then it cost 72p), and never gave the fuel level a second thought.

Jeez that looks exactly like the one I had at 16 (similar sort if condition too) if I remember rightly the exhaust was knackered in mine too doesn't the downpipe run directly behind the front wheel chucking road crap all over it, I'm sure I had to replace mine and isn't that little black square behind the seat a fuel gauge? Can't believe it's 20 years since I had that little bugger....

Thought it was time to strip/rebuild the transmission side (the side that has been open to the elements for who knows how long, but everything is rusty in here).

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0665.jpg

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0666.jpg

And after a good rubbing with a scotchbrite sponge and wd40

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0667.jpg

Also want to get all this crud out of the bottom, so its all got to come out anyway.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0668.jpg

Second clutch removed

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0669.jpg

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0670.jpg

Not forgetting to remove the woddruff key

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0671.jpg

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0672.jpg

Now its time to get it all back in?

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0674.jpg

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0675.jpg

Looks much oilier and mucky now (inc primary clutch)

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0676.jpg

Lastly drifted out the old kickstart oilseal (what a mess), and put a new one in its place

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0677.jpg

I also took the barrell off last night and checked the bore, nothing to worry about (usual 2-stroke scoring/burning), so I painted the barrell and rebuilt the engine (new gaskets, same rings), bags of compression, so obviously the engine was working before it was abandoned.

Pulled the front forks off (makes a change from stanchions)

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0680.jpg

And the races and balls (none have got any flat spots, so there going to be reused)

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0679.jpg

Meanwhile called in at those nice people at RS Paints, and got a 400ml rattle can of Marble Rio Orange, as the only damaged part of the paint is the petrol tank, so 400ml should be enough. The rest are being cut back with T cut, and the odd spot will be treated with whatevers left in the can as spot paint (sprayed into the lid).

Had me tea, and now pulling out the inner springs/shocks

YUK

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0681.jpg

And this was the better of the two!!!

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0683.jpg

And some time later, and lots of elbow greece and gunk.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0682.jpg

Disapointing news was just how bad the fork cover/shroud is, pitted and rustied (but not effecting the metal underneath).

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0684.jpg

Was hoping only the fuel tank needed painting, now it looks like the forks do as well, damn, going to have to re-think, should I strip and repaint the whole damn bike, or continue in patch mode......
I'm thinking maybe I could paint the insides hammerite black, and then touch up the outer of the forks with Orange,,,,hmmmm.

OK, forks are far WORSE than I imagined, the paint has chipped over the years and where its sat in the rain somewhere the rust has eaten into the metal, but not enough to weaken it, but enough to make it look like a patch work quilt, and just touching up the paint won't solve the problem of the rust under the paint.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0687.jpg

So out with the NitroMors (Tesco has 500ml for £5.95 at the mo), and bye bye paint

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0692.jpg

Then many hours of wet & dry and wire-wooling and the forks get the first sacreficial coat of primer. I then use more wet & dry (differing grades) till I can no longer see or feel any more imperfections, then hit it with another coat of primer.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0693.jpg

This coat gets the hair drier treatment, gently heating it to ensure the primer bonds well (not HOT, just warm), and again will be rubbed down, but with very fine wet & dry. Five coats should be enough.

Now on to the frame

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0688.jpg

Looks worse than it is, with some rubbing with Gunk, followed by a wipe over with Meths it doesnt look as bad, sure it has some chips, but they are not as rusty, so I will think about my options over night on the frame. Meanwhile I took the foot rest bracket off as I knew one side was bent, and I gather I need to heat and bend, not just clout to get it straight. Also took off the rear engine mount, and found one rubber bush missing and one in bits, so had to order two new ones, otherwise the engine is going to clunk and shift under load.

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0689.jpg

No surprice I also found the braking bushes, buggered, these are rubber bushes that the suspension pushes back onto when braking (due to the design), and these were split and crumbling, so yet more parts are needed. Still it gives me time to get the forks painted, lol.

Best news I had was I took my plastic panels to my local Halfrauds and spent some time seeing if anything colour wise was even close, as I now need a lot of orange, and not just the 400ml I got from RS Paints, and got lucky. the guy in Halfrauds even let me take the tin outside to compare (but not spray) the lid and panel, it looked damn close, but can you trust those lids?
Brought a can, took it home and masked off an area on one of the side panels where something has rubbed away the paint, and tried the Halfrauds tin, and bingo, PERFECT match (well a blind man would be glad to see it), so anyone looking for Suzuki FZ50 (Marble Rio Orange) Orange, the Peugeot Saville Orange is just about identical, and a fraction of the cost.

One painted (and clear-coated) front fork

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0702.jpg

the old fork bush is the one on the left, and the new replacement on the right (before I cover them in vasseline)

https://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll431/grahamdrry/FZ50/IMAG0703.jpg
