What is wrong with bike design in Europe? All these plastic fantastic race replica's or those slightly homo cruisers not to mention those nasty narrow off-road jobbies that would have my fat ass dragging over each side of the seat. Where are the commuter bikes, the normal go off to work bikes? I've had my licence six months today and want to buy a new bike but not one single machine interests me. I want something like this I found below. My current machine is 32yrs old and just want something similar but less hassle. I dont want a bike that looks like it's headlight melted next to the fire and does less MPG than my car. I also have no concerns for the size of my penis and need a big engine. 80mph and 70mpg would be fine thankyou.

https://www.suzukicycles.com/Product%20Lines/Cycles/Products/TU250X/2012/TU250X.aspx

Sorry for the rant but feel I'm going to be stuck on classic bikes fighting rust and awaiting parts on Ebay forever! Evil or Very Mad

Bike design moves with the times. It seems you're stuck a fair bit behind and are expecting bike companies to be still making the same things they made 30 years ago; the capitalist society generally doesn't work like that thankfully. I don't like a lot of lot modern design, especially a good part of the Honda range, but wouldn't put me off buying one if everything else was right.

If you're look to Europe, you're going to have even more problems as generally we're talking more niche manufacturers that have to aim for a higher end, so 'commuter bikes' aren't going to factor in much.

For a lot of people there's more to biking than good fuel economy and looks.

It sounds like you're in with the "small penis" brigade to me; it's just that rather than thinking a modern looking bike will make up, you think the opposite Wink.

You mean like a 500cc twin commuter? GS500 / CB500 for example?

Nothing is wrong with bike design there are plenty of bikes that fit that criteria

Either that or you want a scooter. Triumph/Ducati are more Marques and don't really make commuter bikes with the possible exception of the monster/Street triple.

They've both Japanese and neither are sold as new models now.

Of course the benefits of the 'droopy' headlights he doesn't like which the new models have is that they generally are considerably better as far as getting useful light out in front of you.

Just because you can do it doesn't mean it is a good idea. Laughing

Not a round headlight among your suggestion Smile - maybe apart from a few of the trumpet twins; but I doubt they do the required fuel economy.

The issue to my mind is that he has a very narrow list of requirements.
It's like saying "I've got an AX diesel and want a modern car that does as good fuel economy and looks about the same". It's not going to happen because times have moved on in a range of ways.

Mmm I know, but they have a decent proven commuting history.

You of all people know a nice Jap bike is the perfect commuter Laughing

Of course - if I was in his situation I'd get a second hand GPZ500s, go for one in good nick if he's got a bit of cash to splash.

But he's choosing on an incredibly restricted criteria it would seem.

If he could get over the fuel economy, the Bonneville would seem to be an ideal choice - 'classic' style, round headlight and european. Always thought it was a bit silly to be worried about fuel economy buying new - when depreciation per mile is probably going to cost you more anyway.

Whats wrong with that? A bloke at the hospital commutes on one. I drool everytime I go for a fag break.

But if you are looking for a cheap and reliable commuter then you are looking for something Japanese or Korean.

As ever budget sets the limits.

Currently borrowing a 97 Monster 750... Its book quote of 45mpg seems fairly true so far, its probably not "ideal" in terms of reliability but it seems pretty capable.

Down on speed from the usual in line 4 750, but its definitely got a kick in the balls with acceleration Thumbs Up

Round light, not a sports bike, comfy, fairly decent ride, nice brakes...pretty good Thumbs Up

OK, I do like that Suzuki, but what do you object to about the Triumph Bonneville, Royal Enfield Bullet, or an unregistered or low mileage YBR250?

Or if you have the budget for a new bike, buy two old bikes, use one as a donor, you'll still spend less.

I checked before my first post as it was the obvious answer; new monster has a 'squished' headlight.

YBR250? They are discontinued for 2012 but dealers still have them here and there new, and you can get them nearly new.

I think that you might have to hold your breath and wait to see what happens with stuff coming from China. Sinnis are looking at launching 250cc versions of their range :-

Mmhmm, but its silly to go buy one brand spanking new right?

There seem to be a few 98-2000 models kicking for £1400-£1700 Question

You have not said how far you are travelling to work? Is it going to be a one use kind of transport. I.E. Just a work horse? What kind of cc are you looking at, how much is in the budget? Are you going to use it all the year round. Or is it more or less dry sunny day's?

As someone has said a scooter could be what you are looking for. Rather than a bike. If you are still looking at a bike. Go to a bike shop and ask. Say you are looking for a 500 or less twin. I would be looking at an air cooled one. No water radiator or ant-freeze to worry about. But that's me.

Closest I could find.
Still - it's nominally European, doesn't push any of the normal 'male posturing' buttons, has a round headlight, and has all the contemporary stylings of a ZX Spectrum.

Throw into the mix that it's a) not much over three grand, and b) a two-stroke, and you've got the perfect 'Screw you, modernity!' statement bike.

This isn't far off I think. 60mpg is apparently pretty likely - if you ride it gently, even more maybe, so not far off.
European, classic styling with the requested round headlight. Apart from the fuel economy being probably just short, reckon it ticks all the requested boxes - still available new:
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/204161/images/motoguzziv7classic.jpg

Oops, forgot that the OP has penis-issues and that the 750cc engine might be a bit of a worry. However, it makes a rather lethargic 48hp or something - so hopefully won't be too many issues there.

I'd say so; but the whole point of the initial post was about new bikes. Masses of used options available.

Ok, the Burgman is new and meets the speed/mpg, but completely ignores the rest - plenty of other non-scooter bikes that more closely match his request.

Thread end failed.

The street triple certainly comes in the 'can commute on it' rather than the 'commuter' category. The fuel consuption is pretty dire when you get at all heavy handed. My wifes renault Twingo does about twice the mpg of my striple Laughing
