What did you rebuild?
Do you have the choke on or off?
Separate question: what position is the choke lever in?
What is the idle mixture screw set to (i.e. all the way, in then back it out X turns)?
Can you keep it running with the throttle on?
Can you keep it running indefinitely with the throttle on?
Have you tried screwing in the idle speed adjuster? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

> Air leaks on carb?
> Re-Check settings for Idle Air Screw
> Check you haven't left off an EGR pipe or something 'daft' like that
> Check you haven't got a carb-balence / blanking plug dropped out the manifold
> Check you have got the exhaust clamped up properly / gasket sealing
> Make sure you have fitted the carb slide the right way round
> Check slide needle position AND that its properly secured in the slide
> Check the throttle Cable. Make sure its seated in the slide properly. Make sure outer is properly seated in adjustor on slide cap. Make sure that the cable hasn't been snagged or kinked or mis-routed when you fitted the engine.
> Check the fuel. Make sure that the fuel is 'fresh' (how long was it sitting in tank while engine was rebuilt?) Make sure its not contaminated with rain-water, condensation, Dog-Piss.... (DON'T ASK! Just as well he was doctored or he'd have lost'em again for THAT one!). Make sure that the fuel strainer on the fuel tap is clean. Make sure that the tap is clean. Make sure that the fuel hose is clear. Make sure fuel hose not kinked.
When tanks come off for major repair, they get 'sloshed' around, and it lifts all the silt and sludge that sediments at the bottom of the tank, and frequently causes 'presumed' carburation faults. So pull tank, drain, consider colour of 'old' fuel. Disguard or set asside. GET FRESH... ALWAYS try and use fresh fuel on a start-up; eliminates a variable. Make sure the bits are clean, and you have a good supply to carb; and try over.
ALSO: if you have fitted an inline fuel filter, between tank and carb. TRY removing it. They often cause an air-lock, or put a 'head' that impedes fuel flow, and it can take some 'faffing' to get them located so they dont give hassle, & its an added variable you can do withoit de-bugging start-up.
JUST THOUGHT: Do you have a 'Vacuum' fuel tap? with take off from inlet manifold to the tap?
If so, would have to be in the 'P' position to flow fuel without vacuum. Vacuum pipe another 'detail' that could have been missed in instalation, letting air into manifold down stream of carb. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
