Hi , I am hoping some one can help me. I am trying to sort out a bike for myself that i got as a non runner.

I have a red live wire coming off the starter motor on my aprilia RS125 (1997) does this go to the starter relay (that appears to be missing Crying or Very sad )

At this point I only have three wires (2 from the main loom and the one red live wire from the starter motor) and looking at pics of a starter motor relay they all have 4 areas that should have wires conected and my one only has three .....PLEASE HELP Embarassed

Thanks Tina

Hi, I don't know anything specific about your bike so I'm going to generalise. When you say that you have seen ''pics'' of the starter relay do you mean actual pictures or do you mean diagrams? Most starter relays have only 3 wires attached. The fourth connection (earth) is usually made via the relay's attachment to the bike's frame.

It's not clear what you have there, a diagram or photo would be useful!

The relay (if you didn't know) is designed to carry a lot of current from the battery to the starter motor when triggered by a low current circuit. Which means you are basically looking for:

a) A relay - Most relays have 4 terminals, two big thick posts and two smaller terminals.

b) You need two great big fat wires. One of these runs from the battery +ve to one of the large terminals in the starter relay. The second runs from the other large terminal on the starter relay to the starter motor. These terminals are usually easily identified because they use a nut to hold the wires to a threaded post. So, there will be one post with a thick wire on it that goes to the battery, remember this post for later because it may be important which of the two posts you use for this connection.

c) Two (Or one...) thin wires (like all the rest of the wires on the bike; horn, indicators etc.) that control the relay. These go to the thinner two of the four terminals. Should not matter which way around they go. In the case where there is only ONE control wire, then what you should look for is a small metal bridge going between the metal post I told you to remember earlier and one of the two control terminals. Connect your single wire to the other control terminal.
