Other will come along soon who have more experience with them. But they are fine bikes, common amongst learning schools which has to count for something.

I wouldn't spend anywhere near £3K on one though. £1K will get you a nice one Thumbs Up

My brother has a GS5 and i have an ER

Nothing major has gone wrong on his bike, he got an 02 model with about 14K for £900

My ER is an 03 plate with 25K miles, and rust is one issue ive found.
Its not serious rust, but just some coverage on the swing arm and bolts/brackets connecting the shocks to the s.arm.
Other than that ive not had any problems with it other than those which i caused=P
As long as its in fairly good nick, you're not bound to go wrong with a nice 500 commuter. Might just be worth having someone who knows bike mechanics to have a look over any bikes you go to see.

P.S ERs are cooler;)

Don't rule out any bigger engined bikes. There aren't many 500's to choose from compared to 600's Idea

Don't agree with that, but then I'm biased as I have a GS500F!

I learnt on a Van-Van and stepped up to a GS500 '98 straight away. Lovely step up of power from a 125, i hit a ton on it (down a hill) but regularly gets to 85. I found the handling adequate, handled twisties well enough, the tank range was decent too, i think i got around 200 miles once but i never took it to reserve (it has no fuel gauge).

Oh, here she is Smile

I love my gs500. Great acceleration even when restricted, takes 600's off the line every time (even if it is only to 45-55mph) a lot of fun to chuck about. Plus if you change the end can and remove the baffles they are lovely and loud! Laughing

heres mine

Ok, the fully faired GS5 looks pretty cool.
The ER can have fairings, but it's called a GPZ Laughing

I doubt you will get much more cost from an SV650, but probably more if you look at IL4's. My SV was only slightly faster than my brothers old GS, and that was a great bike, just doesn't look as good.

I've been riding my GS500F since the start of April and I've put on around 2200 miles on it so far. Loving the bike to bits.

The only problem is finding that I don't have an awful lot of cornering confidence in it.

I've taken a nock of confidence though from drifting the bloody thing at 80mph from locking the brakes. Then again from hitting a slippy patch on the road around a corner and then almost losing the rear end.

I'm getting the confidence back now though.

Edit: Bike cost me £1270 and insurance £380 at 18, 1ncb and 0 claims.

Looking at your budget of £800-3000 .you would get a really nice 600 divvy(yamaha diverson) for around £1200 leaving a nice sum for kit and insurance.Had a go on the gs 500 and found the divvy to have a much nicer riding position. Thumbs Up

Firstly, don't listen to this bullshit. Secondly, from a rider who has posted about having fun on any shitheap listen to me!

I had a gs500 for about 4 months, bought it for 300 quid, rode it around doing wheelies, burnouts, stoppies, crashing, 2 up KD, crashing, lydden hill and more crashing.

Capable enough, although they don't take abuse as well as some other bikes. Handling is good enough for a new rider definately.

I would recommend engine bars, and mine used to overheat. They are quick enough, but slower than the cb500 and er5, in that order.

In the end mine was completely dead and I sold it to paddy for 40 quid.

Get a Fazer.I certainly wish i'd got one instead of the old XJ600 I had.
Soon got fed up with it,as I felt unsafe on it,due to tyres being so narrow it caught all the ruts in the rd.
Can't fault my 98 Fazer, but then I am new to big bikes.

Fuck off you bender. How is that full of shit? These bikes you can get off the line proper quick on. Yours probably had a fucked clutch you jackass. The whole point of twin cylinders is the acceleration aspect rather than in iL4 screamer for top end. Rolling Eyes Middle Finger

Firstly I'll ignore the obvious abuse towards me.

All figures taken from MCN, may not be reliable overall, but from the same website we can assume the same amount of bias.

GS500 a parallel twin budget commuter
Quote:
Top speed 110mph
1/4-mile acceleration 14.8 secs
Power 47bhp
Torque 30ftlb
Weight 174kg

GSF600 an in line four 'sports tourer' from the same manufacturer

Quote:
Top speed 129mph
1/4-mile acceleration 12.4 secs
Power 78bhp
Torque 39ftlb
Weight 204kg

GSX-R600 in line four supersports from the same manufacturer (I went with the older one to make you look less of a liar)
Quote:
Top speed 164mph
1/4-mile acceleration 11.15 secs
Power 97.5bhp
Torque 44ftlb
Weight 161kg

YZF-R6 in line four supersports from Yamaha
Quote:
Top speed 165mph
1/4-mile acceleration 10.75 secs
Power 133bhp
Torque 51ftlb
Weight 166kg

Just for funsies I thought I'd support my original post where I state the CB500 is the faster
Quote:
Top speed 120mph
1/4-mile acceleration 13.2 secs
Power 57bhp
Torque 35ftlb
Weight 173kg

Ironically without realising it you have agreed with me about what I was saying about the bike being only part of the limiter. Just you went about it in a really stupid wrong way.
Happy to educate anyone mind.

I'm not talking about a quarter mile lol. As I said the gs500 from off the line, you can get it to take off quicker than most 600's. Obviously anything above 45mph ish you'd get raped because thats where the 600's make their power. But for town lights and such, gs's are good hacks.

I'm saying that is bullshit. The same rider on a gs500 will not get a better start than on a gixxer600.

Similarly, I would suggest that the majority of gs500s have commuter style tyres, and less able clutch plates.
600s, especially sports ones will generally have better tyres, and nicer clutches.

EDIT: Forgot to ask, how many bikes have you ridden before dishing out these bad words over a 500 commuter? I've owned all the bikes in my sig, and ridden a hella lot more.
