Hello folks,

The boss has asked me to find out if there's an app or code that would allow us to find out the company that visted our site via their IP address. I'm thinking some kind of IP lookup with a WHOIS query that's automated. Does anyone know if such a service exists? Long term I'd like it to output the results to a document that I can stick on the server for reference for everyone. Karma for those who can help Very Happy

Is this a one off thing or on going?

Whois is for domains not ip addresses. And only really traceable if they're static.

You could still trace route one and see where their nearest exchange is.

Though try typing the ip address into your address bar, may connect if its their server

It's supposed to be an ongoing thing, I had the idea of using the whois as what the boss wants is to be able to track their domains, to find out who they are, and why they are visiting the site, and if we can contact them to give them any help. I did think that dynamically allocated IP addresses would make it difficult, as unless the tracker logs the domain at the time of visit, all we get is an IP which only gets us as far as their ISP. Cheers for the help.

Seems very possible...
Depends on the business I guess, many who is will just get you sort of .virginmedia.net as you say only going as far their ISP

But If i do a whois on myself I get Hostname: zen-inetgw-9a.nhs.uk so you can see where i'm coming from...but I think most businesses will just show the ISP unless they're government or something. hmm.

There are places that offer that service https://www.leadsexplorer.com/en/le/l/Visitor_tracking_by_IP.html

IF you knew a block of IPs was form a certain business you could work it out that way, sort of whitelisting them and having it flag up when they connect from that IP block Thinking

Edit: Cansa's links are much better

Without a hell of a lot of work, you're not going to get a massive amount of information.

Small and medium business will be using a standard ISP.

I'm trying to remember what it's been like when I've worked with large companies like cisco - but got a feeling their UK office at least still used a standard ISP's resolution.

You're not going to be presented with localflowershop.com accessed your website for two hours yesterday sort of thing.

The only way I can see it being useful is when you can associate an IP address with a company yourself, then use that to further inform.
For instance if sending out emails with images, you could get the IP of the person reading the emails if images are enabled/they view the images.

https://www.sawmill.co.uk

You can track all sorts of info about visitors, including the path they take through your site, geographic (to an extent) location, their OS, and a metric buttload of other information.

The £75 "Lite" version will allow you to analyse 1 log file, and the live demo on the site shows you what a full version can do. Some money will be required.

Word of warning - DON'T go pestering companies because someone from there looked at your site. Unless you want a shitstorm of privacy and/or hacking issues potentially blowing up in your face.

The real trick with Sawmill is to use the data to redesign your site to make visitors contact you.

Few court cases would be so expensive as to make it unviable for any reasonable size company to take the risk.

After all, giving tracking info to the biggest supplier of targeted advertising is pretty much why people don't like invasive cookies Laughing .

All the best

A company the size of Google, who's main bread and butter income is from targetted advertising aren't going to roll over so easily and let all these laws govern the way they track people.

The same way they all grouped together to fight the SOPA bill as it would directly destroy their own businesses.

Then again, it's one rule for the 99% and another for the 1% when it comes to these things. You look at the likes of Pirate Bay providing links to illegal files, yet not hosting any of the content on their own servers and they get pelted with the full force of the law.

Then you have Google, one of the biggest search engines in the world, doing exactly the same thing, offering all kinds of searchable pirate material and nothing happens to them. Pirate Bay even tried to use that argument and failed.

Hi

Maybe they won't roll over, but they can always provide a non cookies based solution. As it is what they are doing appears to be illegal.

All the best
