temporary traffic lights for roadworks

At the moment round my end they are replacing all of the water mains. This means there are loads of temporary traffic lights set up on my way to the station in the morning. I'm on the road at about 5:15am. Today I got stuck at 3 sets of these and missed my train by 2 minutes. Gutted!!!

Anyway, I'm sure that I read or heard somewhere that I can go through these lights even if they are red.

Is this true, if so what are the ins and outs of it, or is it an urban myth?

I did the day before because there were no cars behind, either behind or in front, but today there were cars already queing at them that i filtered past, so thought better of it. TBH I can see clearly past to the other end of these lights aswell

Of course you can go through them, much like you can chop the balls off of a bike thief and feed them to him. Each one has implications though.

If you're going to run a red-light, just go for it. Sometimes I find road-works temporary traffic lights a complete piss take; when there is a good view up the entire road, the road is completely clear, the road works are a few meters long and it's 11pm at night... and the lights are on red. I'm sorry, I'm just going to go through them.

Just don't get caught or crash.

There should be a Traffic Order in place. If not, then they're just pretty coloured lights with no particular road traffic meaning other than that you're slightly more likely than usual to get smashed into if you ride past the red light.

Even if they're validated by a TO, then ignoring them has exactly the same legal penalty as being caught exceeding the posted speed limit. I bet that doesn't keep you awake at nights.

Slightly off topic but theres a roundabout near me with lights at every entrance that seems to work on some kind of sensor. The problem is that bikes dont set it off so if its late at night you either have to just go through red or wait till a car comes to set you free

little tip, most of these lights work on light sensing, if you flash your lights a few times on the run up to them and its clear the other side then they change quicker.

But I think we get electricity shipped up from the south still, so no surprise.

I work for a traffic management company and there isnt a traffic light in the world that changes when you flash your lights, all portable lights use a short distance radar which sends out a beam, when the beam hits your vehicle it bounces back letting the TL know something is there. If neither light detects a vehicle they will sit on all red until somebody turns up, which is usally somebody flashing their lights, the traffic light detects their presence and changes to green, they believe it was due to them flashing, it wasn't.
Oh and a red light is red light no matter how long the works area or if you can see the other side. we've had people jumping lights cause they can see nothing approaching at the other side and been hit by a vehicle coming from a third or fourth phase.
