I was just checking my drive oil lvel, when I wondered "what's that for?" This chrome cover below;

So, I gave it a bit of a twist and off it popped leaving this Crying or Very sad ;

It looks like it shouldn't have come off, but I've no idea what it is. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the Haynes, but I am going to take a guess, that the cap is covering the breather hole.

If the shaft drive was 'sealed' then when the frothing oil chopped and heated by the pinion & crown gears got hot, it would pop gaskets.

That will be to let hot air out instead, and let air, but hopefully not crap back in when it cools.

But dont quote me!

I knew there'd be a technical name for it Laughing But, I believe you top up the oil through the big nut just below that

No it isn't, you top the oil up through the bolt below it.

That's a breather, it allows excess pressure out of the bevel housing; taking the cover off allows water in, so probably best to put it back.

Laughing Thanks

Makes sense. I haven't got a Haynes, but do have a Clymer, but it's not mentioned in there anywhere Crying or Very sad

The problem is, now it just sits on top, but it's very lose. It'll just fall off if I leave it on now. It sort of looks like it was soldered together, but I don't see how it could be. And, if it was, then I can't see the point of it.

Aha! yep that would be it! I looked at the first photo and saw it said 'use something gear oil' next to it so assumed it was the filler hole!

To be honest, I've never investigated mine as already too many other faults lol. I also cant seem to find a manual for this bike but agree that Mike is probobly right in that it would be some sort of vent rather than a filler cap?

Now it's stopped raining, I've had a chance to look a bit more closely. It is soldered on, there's another little hole round the back. So it looks like it's simply to keep water and stuff out. - fixed!
