Well, as mentioned to some, I was house sitting for someone who had some very out of date food in his fridge. 4 years out of date stilton gets you drunk... fact.

Anyway, I had some of his beer before -a selection of randoms ales, some of which needed sieving- and it was pretty rough but potent and drinkable.

Anyway, he had some of a brand I do know very well (Chang) that I tried yesterday, and it was rough as arseholes but also went to my head quickly.

Turned out he had about 20 bottles of random beers knocking about... all about 4 years old, most with next to no sedimentation.

Does anyone know what happens to 'vintage' beer? Does it get stronger, gasier, darker? Just out of curiousity like.

Does it actually become dodgy dodgy, or are the chemical farts the worst effect of it?

It "vinifies", it can't really get much stronger. A real ale could possibly ferment out any residual sugar for a tiny extra hit and extra CO2. Totally clear lager type stuff has nothing to do the work.

The alcohol will act as a preservative and usually nowt can get in, so unless the seal goes on the bottle or can it can still be drunk, just might taste a bit different than the brewery would guarantee.

Depends if you drink too much of it while in the company of any sailors, marines, or Harley riders.

depends on how its stored.. in hot countries like Thailand they only put date of manufacture.... i have bought beer here not over 6 months old and it can taste shite whereas back in Ireland i have drank beer 6 months out of date and its fine (leftovers from xmas stored in the back shed)....bottom line, if it tastes ok its ok... btw that Chang is fcking horrible unless you drink it with a full glass of ice Thumbs Up

Do keep up at the back, this is in Perth, Australia. Kept fairly cool in cupboards.

I tried a few last night (after the assurances it doesn't become fart inducing moon shine) and they were fine, although the Change tastes like ass. But then Chang always tastes like ass.

Sick

No one drinks Chang for the taste. The Export stuff is a lot smoother as it's not a rice beer and is only 5%, not the Thai 6.4%

There is ale in storage from 150 years ago that's still drinkable though a very aquired taste! I had a 2 year out of date cider the other week. Tasted fine and had no ill effects. I once got given a 2 year old of date bottle of carling that had all sorts of crap floating in it. That went in the bin!
