 |
|
Hi,
I recently passed my CBT and bought a bike for my commute to work. The bike in question is a 2 year old, second hand Kymco Pulsar 125. From outward appearances it's in very good condition with no signs of misuse/treatment, and I have the warranty book describing it's services. There was nothing abnormal here.
While I was waiting for tax and insurance, it was sat on a drive way at a friends, covered and protected from the elements. It left the dealers after a general check over, and was fitted with a new chain. At the time, the oil level was sitting on the high mark.
I have only driven the bike about 35 miles, and today I did my general checks before a short hop out. I noticed that the oil level appears to have dropped dramatically, though there are no large pools or trails of liquid on the ground below. It had been on it's center stand for a least 12 hours before this.
I'm a new rider, but I haven't thrashed the bike around and the engine seems/sounds/works fine.
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated (as I need it for work!) |

Sadly it appears that the abuse of these bikes takes place before the first owner collects the bike, when it's component parts are manufactured and put together. Quality control seems to leave a lot to be desired and, while the bike might look nice and tidy on the outside, inside a lot of these Chinese bikes seem to be disaster areas waiting to happen.
The people selling them hope to draw, (perhaps slightly naive), buyers in by presenting a, (what appears to be), modern looking, desirable bike. In fact, they're usually quite cheaply put together machines with serious inherent mechanical problems.

The first picture shows signs of an oil leak from the drain plug - probably needs a new copper washer, but might as well wait until you change the oil and filter.
The second picture shows that oil has been dripping onto the exhaust, and from the direction of the streaks, whilst it was being ridden rather than when it was parked.
Keep the oil topped up to just under the high mark - checked when the bike is upright. Clean all signs of oil from under the engine casing, frame, exhaust, etc. and take the bike for a ride around the block to see if you can find where it is leaking from. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Had this happen to an old car I had when I was young, perhaps I should say ex-car.
There's not many places oil can disapear to if it's not leaking. Unfortunately, none of them are good places. Is it blowing blue smoke out of the exhaust by any chance? ____________________ Honda Goldwing GL 1000 Current love

It might not glitter, but it certainly isn't rusty either. I appreciate that bikes from China are of lower quality than Italian vehicles and the like, but from what I can see Kymco aren't essentially Chinese trash. |
