I was thinking about this whilst driving along the coast last night.

Imagine you were flicking the car through the bends beside the coast, when you lost control and ended up going over the cliff.

You wake up, with the car submerged in water... you've still got air in the car, but the water is filling up.

If you try to open the door when the car is fully submerged, it wouldn't budge due to the pressure, right?

So... to survive this ordeal (assuming you've got leccy windows and the power has now failed), you'd wait till the inside of the car was full of water, take a breath of air just before the last of it disappears, then you'd be able to open the door.... right?

I don't know why i thought of this, but i did. so there.

This is going from movies i've seen, which are obviously nothing like real life, so i'm probably completely wrong.

This was featured on Top Gear a while back and you need to wait for the car to hit the bottom of the lake or whatever before the pressure stabilizes and you'd be able to get out.

However... Round by the bottom of a cliff you'd surely land on the rocks *-) ?

Okay, he does say off the road and into a lake, but I guess the principle is the same for off a cliff into the sea

EDIT:
The links are to the top gear episode djr was talking about

id have a go at pushing the windscreen out with my legs. If that failed i would wait for the car to fill up with water, but whilst im waiting i would grab any empty bottles lying about in the car and use them for emergency air when the car is full of water Laughing

Even once the car is full up the pressure outside is higher that that inside for some time (depending on the depth of the water), so it'd still be difficult to open the door.
Much better off getting out ASAP when you hit the water - if you're awake!

Mythbusters did it as well. You need to get the door open straight away, or wait for it to fill up. If you remain calm, you can just about get out, but of course, you won't be calm, you'll be knackering yourself trying to get the door open, so you're essentially brown bread. Doubly so if it goes over, the bloke could barely even tell which way was up.

I do carry an emergency escape hammer / belt cutter in my car now, not because I think I'll ever use it, but any excuse to buy more toys.

You need one of these. Slight problem is that most will by now have multiple rust holes in the floor.

Just hold your breath and stop moving... bodies have a tendancy to float with full lungs... usually. Whatever you do though don't breathe out cause you sink like a stone

Drowning doesn't bother me.

Its being trapped in a BURNING CAR which concerns me somewhat.

If you're ever trapped in a burning car I recommend driving off a cliff into the water.

Not sure you'd be able to use the hammer once you're under water however as i suspect the water resistance would stop you having enough force to smash the window *-) ?

The idea is to smash it after the water is high enough to stop you opening the door (doesn't take much) but before it covers the windows. It could happen!

To answer the other wit, I keep it front and centre. Whenever I see a puddle, I grab it and keep it cocked and ready - Careful Now. Wink

Futile, windscreens are fucking strong, it took me about 20 full power swings with a 4ft crowbar to make a decent hole in one, you will NEVER get out through a windscreen, go for a door window, they're much easier.
