Hey,

So after passing my Mod 1 back in Jan I have finally gotten round to booking my Mod 2 for this Wednesday!

Now I haven't had any lessons, but I am a pretty good driver (I think) and read every 'Mod 2' thread on here. But since actually booking it I feel a lot less confident driving (My driving is the same, but my idea of how good it is has come down).
Any bad habits that I haven't picked up hopefully will only be driver faults.

Guess the only way I will find out how good it is shall be to go for it!

Who else didn't get lessons to do their test?

p.s. I'm doing it in Enfield, so yeah, if you have any specific advice on that area let me know.

I think you are feeling the same as most people do before there test.Don't let it worry you mod2 is a breeze Thumbs Up Remember your obs and indicators.Do what the examiner says in a safe way.pass should be yours.. Very Happy

Revise these questions as well .You will be asked a few before the test begins Mr. Green
Mod 2 Test Questions and Answers
SAFETY CHECK QUESTIONS FOR MOTORCYCLE TESTS.

. Identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

Identify where to check level, i.e. dipstick or sight glass. Explain that level should be between max and min marks. For dipstick remove dipstick and wipe clean, return and remove again to check oil level against max/min marks. For sight glass, ensure glass is clean when checking.

* Show me how you would check that the horn is working on this machine (off road only).

Check is carried out by using control (turn on ignition if necessary).

* Identify where the brake fulid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic fluid.

Identefy reservoir, check level agains high/low markings.

* Show me how you would check that the lights and brake lights and reflectors are clean and working.

Operate switch (turn on ignition if necessary), identify reflectors. Check visually for cleanliness and operation.

* Tell me how you would check the condition of the chain on this machine.

Check for chain wear, correct tension and rear wheel alignment. Tension should be adjusted as specified in the machine handbook. Drive chain should be lubricated to ensure that excessive wear does not take place.

* Show me what checks you would make on the steering movement before using the machine. Handlebars should be free to move smoothly from full left lock to full right lock without any control cables being stretched, trapped or pinched and without any snagging between moving and fixed parts.

* Tell me how you would check your tyres to ensure that they are correctly inflated, have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

Correct tyre pressure settings can be found in the owner's manual. Pressures should be checked using a reliable gauge. Tread depth must be at least 1mm deep, forming a continuous band at least 3/4 of the breadth of the tread and all the way around. There should be no lumps, bluges or tears.

* Show me how you would check the operation of the front brake on this machine.

Wheel the machine forward and apply the front brake.

* Show me how you would check the operation of the brakes on this machine.

Check for escessive travel on the brake lever and the brake pedal and for unusal play or sponginess.

* Show me how you would check the operation of the engine cut out switch.

Operate switch without the engine being started.

What advice you would give a pillion passenger ?

* Tell them to dress appropriately and wear and approved safety helmet. (fastened).

* Tell them not to get on or off until instructed to do so.

* Make sure they get on the motorcycle from the kerb side and sit astride the motorcycle, with their feet on the foot pegs at all times, holding onto grab rail -rider- or a combination of the 2
* Don't fidget or move around.

* Lean with the rider not the machine.

* Don't give any arm signals.

* Tell them to look over my shoulders don't look around my shoulders.

What adjustments would you make to the motorcycle if you were taking a pillion passenger ?

The following Information can be found in the owners Handbook.

* Increase the tyre pressures.

* Stiffen the suspension.

* Lower the headlight aim.

* Lower the rear foot pegs down.

* Adjust the mirrors after the pillion gets on.

* some motorcycle may require the chain adjusting (see owners manual)

How will the extra weight affect the handling of the motorcycle?

* The centre of gravity is raised making the motorcycle top heavy and unstable.

* At slow speeds the motorcycle is more unstable.

* The steering will become lighter.

* Accelerating and braking will take longer.

* At speed the bike will drop into the bend quicker and be harder to lift back up.

What could also affect your balance?

* Gusting wind.

* Alcohol and drugs.

* A badly maintained motorcycle.

* Unevenly packed top box and panniers.

* Uneven road surfaces. eg wet - painted- man hole covers

Good luck have fun sw Thumbs Up

Done mine at Enfield, passed 1st time no lessons, the area is pretty good, pay attention to the road markings, theres a couple of 20mph limits not to clearly marked but have speed restriction humps so you know its 20mph, theres one section that is a peach, go's from 30mph up to 50mph and lasts about 15mins, just keep your eyes open for the speed signs and get up to speed reasonabley quick, plenty of obs and you should be fine.

I didnt take any lessons either and passed first time, its not that difficult, just remember your obs.

I think it was Rogerborg who quoted some stats about taking the tests with and without lessons, and there was very little difference in the pass rates between those who had taken lessons and those who hadnt.

If you feel confident give it a go Thumbs Up

If you fail, you'll have to pay another £80.
Two ways to think about it, choose one to suit your personality type.

1. You don't often get the chance to work for £80 an hour, so give them what they're looking for. Smug look on face cause you're not going to fail, you're the boss.

https://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lz9mh7GSbV1qe01sr.jpg

2. In the grand scheme of things, you'll look back on it as nothing even if you have to retake. An extra £80 over years and years of riding? I spend more on Big Macs.

Oh hai, 'sup?

The latest comparative figures that I can find are 2009 - 2010, which covers the changeover from single to (new) 2 part tests.

Leaving aside A1 light, the pass rates are:

Standard/A2 (potentially untaught and largely[1] under 21):
Single test: 63.7%
Module 1: 56.1%
Module 2: 65.1%

Large/DAS/A (overwhelmingly taught, all 21+)
Single test: 69%
Module 1: 62.5%
Module 2: 71.3%

There are too many unknowns to draw firm conclusions, but from the headline figures and my own experience, I'd suggest that if you're going down the A2 route and have managed to ride around soLo for a while without getting smushed, there's little economic case for getting taught.

That's not to say training is a bad idea, but one of Tef's "all you can eat for a tin of biscuits" courses, or IAM/RoSPA after you pass offer better value for money than a standard "3 days then tests" cram-course.

[1] There are other stats kicking around which show that the vast majority of 21+ candidates sit the 'large/DAS/A' test. It's a holiday Monday though, you'll have to find those yourself. Razz

If you can ride a bike, you're ready for the test. If you're not ready for the test, what are you doing riding a bike around? Wink

I've got my second mod 2 in Eastbourne this Friday. I failed last time because my signalling was all round messy. This would have easily been cleared up by a riding school I thought, so looked around for a few brush-up lessons. However the prices seemed just too much (£40 per hour, one wanted). I think that I'm just going to take test after test until I pass one.

Running total of money spent on tests so far:

Mod 1 - 15
Mod 2 (1) - 75
Mod 2 (2) - 75
Total - £165

God I hope I don't have to spend more.

Ha! Amateur:

* CBT: £140
* Theory: £30
* 4 Day DAS course, which I screwed up by hitting a cone on the mod one, when the mod two was booked the day after; losing both test fees. £650
* Mod-1 retake: £175 including bike hire, instructor, etc.
* Mod-2: £235
* Mod-2 retake: £235

Total: £1465

Still smarting from it all...

Ouch. I'm not adverse to pissing money away on bikes though. I bought a badly thrashed CG125 for £800 and spent the same again getting it sorted by different mechanics. We live and learn...

I bought a barely used YZF-R125 the day after the CBT and my FZ6 three days after passing mod-2, so errr... neither am I.

Nothing else worth spending money on at the moment.

Failed my mod 2 today with only one minor but one major. Keep in the left hand lane unless overtaking or turning. Ride for yourself, not the examiner (he actually jumped lights and made some risky manoeuvres to stay behind me) and not for other people.

My fail was for not seeing the acceleration lane on a main road, meaning I just entered the road. It was only 40mph so the lane was pointless anyway. The road markings were worn and it was a total mess of tarmac. Stupid reason to fail but I didn't spot it and it could have been dangerous if there was other traffic so fair play to the examiner.

Just watch out for crazy bits of road like that, they'll catch you out easily. My riding was otherwise pretty much perfect Sad

Hard luck buddy, hopefully next time u will get it! I mean you only had 1 minor and a stupid major that ruined it for you, so you know how to get it right next time!

Yeah, gonna book the soonest one I can again. Just a warning to the OP, watch out for that sort of thing. The test routes are designed to take you through every possible type of road. I encountered rural roads at both 60 and 30, town riding, city riding, a stop sign (I think those are always in) and narrow lanes with no definite right of way to either direction of traffic. In my training I came across a miniature level crossing for a mini train!

Just stay alert and be prepared for all sorts of crazy road layouts, the routes are designed to make sure you can cope with anything you may encounter. Good luck!!

Thats a result, some say its easier to pass in the rain as you dont want to be out on the road and the examiner doesnt want to be out on the road (and he has to do it all day). Also you do tend to ride a lot slower and safer in the wet.

Just make sure you leave extra braking distance and space between cars. Remember the 2 second rule?

"Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule, when it pours make it four!"
