Nevada has become the first state to fully licence a driverless car...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17989553

How long before this becomes commonplace technology do ya reckon ?

Wonder what the legal aspect of getting wasted in the pub before driving home in one could be...

The sensors and tech required to make it work at all is madness. Laser scanners don't work too great in the rain either so it has quite some way to come before it's truely useful and fully capable. I think self drive as an optional extra will arrive just in time for the oil to run out Laughing

Fair enough on the other points but this is probably the one it's going to be best at.

A car with access to the net is going to know the prices at stations better than you will.

According to the article it did 140,000 miles with the only incident being caused by a 3rd party at lights. Not like they've just been given permission for a laugh.

I think it will be a while before people actually start to use them.
I wonder what it would do if those stupid portable traffic lights where stuck on red like always. You would probably be waiting for hours Laughing

I think companies should be worrying more about the oil running out and less about being able to have a car that drives itself...

Sadly, I expect they've spent as much on preparing for the inevitable lawsuits as they have on developing the technology.

If it can see bikes better than a flat capper in a Micra, then I'm all for it.

I think these are a fantastic idea, as long as you can turn it off when you want to.

It would massively reduce congestion on the motorways, and when I want to drive the 4 1/2 hours the length of the country on boring motorways, just whack on the autodrive and do something else.

The best thing is that for 95% of the population the computer would driver better than the human. You want fucktards off the road? Don't want any more SMIDSY's - this is the solution.

Personally I can't wait. I reckon these will be mainstream before 2030.

I think they would be great as public transport, but not much else. DRIVING IS FUN!
It wont take off for that reason Laughing

It's only a matter of time before they got hacked or something, a virus in your car that drives you to a warehouse full of muggers Cool

Being able to turn it off is a good idea, you could stick it on if you're tired or on the motorway.

Infact I could see these working if everyone had one, else it wouldnt. They could all speak to each other to avoid collisions

Agreed good idea if it actually works and knows all the road laws, wouldn't get them pulling out on you at the last second!

How many years before they make it law that human driven cars are a thing of the past and for our own saftey, all cars are self driven?

Many, many years but I can see it already. Hackers getting into the software and sending people miles away on random journeys, unable to stop or get out Laughing

It probably won't be long before something goes wrong and there's a u-turn on this.

what happens if it bluescreens?

It doesn't. There will be multiple redundant systems controlling the vehicle and as soon as it notices one or more are down it will pull to the side of the road and call its own recovery truck.

As someone who has worked in 'AI', I can tell you the software is relatively simple, the sensors are the big points of failure but they will again have built in redundancy.

CHR15 wrote:
does it have the ability to understand stop and go men on roadworks?

Yes, and all the other situations. Probably more so than most drivers. If it does get 'confused' it will revert to manual control.

CHR15 wrote:
if 2 kids ran out into the road, one into its path, and the other into the path it would have to take to swerve around the first, what would it do?

Take the option that would minimise casualties and do so far faster than a human. In this simplistic enforced moral choice scenario it would:
1. Calculate the distance to and speed of likely impacts
2. Ascertain the size of the targets and likely damage an impact would cause
3. Use the balance of its probability calculations to pick the one who would likely survive the impact most (perhaps by virtue of being bigger, or 5 feet further away etc.)
4. Very likely cause far less damage than a human driver
5. Do all this faster than a human could possibly do
6. Record everything for the impending lawsuit

If there were 0 chance or the probabilities were close (lets say 3 people jumped purposefully into motorway traffic) it would choose not to take action (other than braking of course) and hit the one directly in front.

Yes https://youtu.be/cdgQpa1pUUE

It decides mathematically with all the info available. It's much better at logical decisions than you are.

Everything about these cars seems to be safer so the nay sayers will soon have to eat their words on that one. The problems will be that they will have to achieve unattainable levels of safety before some people will realise this. It won't matter that human drivers are 100x worse - the one incident will set of a daily mail inspired rage.

To mitigate this, they will be auto drive with a human in charge. They'll push liability onto the early adopters ie. the car won't be driving itself, it will be driving under the supervision of the driver. There will probably be waivers to sign and a training course for everyone in the first consumer group.

Eventually though the tech will prove to be much, much safer and you won't be able to argue with the numbers...

Slow and steady introduction, but I certainly expect to have a robotic chaufer when I retire.
