You don't see rows and rows of unsold motorcycles parked up in fields, so perhaps the need for millions of pounds worth of advertising is less for motorcycles than for cars.
I always thought that massive advertising campaigns were mainly for things that wouldn't sell otherwise! ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Ummm... you don't see them because they stay in their shipping crates.
New bike registrations have fallen every year since 2008. Litre+ "Adventure Sports" are holding up, 125s are selling well, but every other engine size and bike type has been (and remains today) in freefall. Triumph and BMW are doing OK, but the Japanese are taking a sustained beating.
Dealers have been going under left, right and centre, as we've discussed here again and again. For example, BMW - one of the few brands actually still doing OK - recently closed their Glasgow Motorrad store, leaving them with no presence at all anywhere in the West of Scotland. Edinburgh, Dundee and Inverness now sell to and service a population of 5 million people.
Go into a dealer today (if you can find one) and you'll be offered a deal on "new" 2011 or even 2010 stock. Suzuki are cutting their own throats to shift stock, heavily discounting bikes that were already the cheapest big-brand vehicles around.
The number of people passing their bike tests halved when the new 2 part test came in in 2009, and has only just started to recover a bit. Most of those budget 125 sales are going to eternal L platers only interested in avoiding congestion charges and fuel bills. That will just drive manufacturers to focus on cutting costs rather than making better bikes.
And despite us getting the shaft on new prices (as always) the bikes that are in the country don't sell for much, so Nardo is forever buying up truckloads of them and taking them to Elbonia, is very good business, make many Elbonian Quatloos.
If there was ever a time for all bike marques to club together (via the MCIA, for example) and take out some generic "Bikes, they're fucking ace, fill your boots like it's 1986" adverts in Zoo or Nuts or during Top Gear repeats on Dave, then it's now, while there's a chance of some sun.
I want to see adverts with some stupid big tits draped over stupid big bikes, ridden by 20-something blokes wearing stupid big grins. Pedboi Pete and Midlife Max aren't enough to sustain the industry in the mid to long term, and they should be doing something to turn it around rather than just crossing their fingers and hoping for an economic miracle.

Probably all the P.C old people that write in every time they see something they 'think' is dangerous
Wouldn't shock me if people wrote in and complained about a motorbike advert as 'advocating dangerous activities' to youths. ____________________ Fzr-600 1999 |
