Hi everyone, just read an article about an e petition having been set up by MAG, BMF, MCL, and Bennets insurance who want the goverment of the day to put compulsory motorcycle related questions in the driving test, to increase ( supposedly ) awareness of two wheeled users on UK roads, they have about 36000 signatures but need 100,000, looks like they need more support and better advertising, I've signed, have a read yourselves to see what you think, found the article on p6 of motorcycle monthly ( maybe in other publications ) or look for it in
direct gov, sounds good and makes sense, will it make a difference? who knows! Smile stay loose and safe out there Thumbs Up

For a long time I have thought it would be a good idea for the car test to include a session on scooter (similar to the cbt). This to show the person taking the car test how vulnerable it can feel on two wheels.

What about cyclists?
Horse riders?
Ambulances?
Lorries?

Learners should be learning all the points, not just specific ones made compulsory because one section moaned.

Eh, as I've opined every time this is posted (lots), I think it's inadequate tokenism. Updating the hazard clips to show a near miss with a bike would be the minimum that might have any effect.

Wouldn't that be great - make everybody do a CBT, on a 50cc ped, before they can drive a car! Would scare be life out of them Twisted Evil
Alas, never going to happen...

Let's push for something more radical. Give newbie test-doers a choice;

*Complete a CBT before doing the Cat. B theory test. OR,
*Sit through a 90 minute video at the theory test centre of truely horrific motorcycle road traffic accidents, before starting the Cat. B theory test.

If you want to increase awareness of powered two wheelers amongst the masses then IMHO the only way to achieve this is to encourage as many of them to use PTWs as possible.

If I was in charge then I'd make all sub-50cc PTWs available to ride to everyone over the age of 16 with no licence, no registration and no plates or special insurance required. I'd treat them as bicycles really.

I'd wager the huge savings would mean in a generations' time we'd have a significantly increased number of road users with the experience of two wheeled travel.

Encouragement and a change of attitude is the key IMO. Forcing peeps will just not work.

unfortunatly without any formal testing or tutoring those 50cc's would probably end up in the morgue faster than houdini in an escape attempt

Kris' suggestion which is along the lines of European rules seems to make sense.
Forcing people that don't like bikes to do a CBT I could see leading them to thinking that the bikes themselves are the dangerous bit. While they'd unlikely have any real experience of riding bike - as they'll be being shepherded around by instructors in high vis.
