While this is about California I'd be very surprised if the results of this study weren't broadly similar in the uk:

https://jalopnik.com/5908329/

I hate the road vigilantes, there are a good number over here too. Even worse when I pop over to Germany - the number of ordinary citizens who try to enforce the speed limited sections of the autobahn!

I reckon that instead of the DfT spunking money on those "Think Bike, Think Biker" ads, that they should just leaflet every household with "Oi! Filtering is legal! Read your bloody highway code!"

Bloody hell; I stay the hell away from splitting on the motorway or any other time the traffic isn't pretty much stationary. Seen people do too many thick things too many times...

Not sure about the ageist stuff - I've had many a wannabe screaming the nuts off his scooter trying to keep up with the Zed in a 30 zone.
And whilst I filter more than when I was younger the days of flying down the M25 at 80 whilst everything else moves at 30 are long past. Smile

its a sad fact that there are car drivers out there who actively seem to enjoy stopping motorbikes getting through a gap, deliberately moving closer to the white line etc, i have actually seen a few smug grins when they have done this to me in the past - really hard to stay calm.

I refuse to let them wind me up. On the rare occasions this has happened to me whilst wearing steel toe capped boots I have given them a boot on the way past - funny how a dink in their door wipes the smile off their faces!! BUT I wouldn't recommend doing this as there's a good risk you'll bust a leg, eat tarmac or get reported for damage - not unless you're proper mental Twisted Evil

Strangely, since fitting ape hangers on my bike it's like the parting of the red sea. They all move over for me even if I'm happy to just stay in the flow. Loud straight pipes help, mind you.

Last time this happened to me, once I got in-front, I let every car that was waiting to turn or come out, go Smile After quite a few, I went on my merry way filtering again with lots of nice car drivers not blocking me Laughing

A friend of mine once had one of those ex Rozzer white BMW's and rode it with a white helmet and a high vis, all blue bits off but left the luminous stripey bits on it, EVERYTHING always just moved over and of course I would duly follow in the wake! Lovely.

Simian capital punishment operative?

You know when you paint a ceiling and your arms get more and more tired as the blood struggles to get up to your fingers. Imagine riding a bike like that.

*Googles 'ape hangers'*
Ahhh, I hope they're at least as tall as these, else they're just clip-ons.

I get this *every* time I filter along the A13. If I had a James Bond style numberplate then I'd be tempted to punch their mirror before disappearing with the last laugh.

I get the exact opposite, cars on the A13, from the A406 to Blackwall tunnel) (and the M11/A406) all start moving out of my way as I filter, sometimes to the point where their car tyres will clip the kerb edging, which always makes me cringe. I usually say ta as I pass, but sometimes there are too many to thank.

Don't get me wrong, I find the A13 one of the best roads for courteous drivers (plus they're used to filtering bikes, local towns are the absolute worst because they *really* don't want you to overtake and they seem to think filtering/overtaking [safely] is wrong), but my point is that every time I commute I *always* get at least one tosspot who purposely closes the gap. Usually turns out to be a middle aged white male in some generic rep-mobile, although I've noticed young mums are starting to do it more.

It has happened to me, but not for quite a few years, even then it was rare enough for me to remember specific incidents. I have found that since DAS started many years ago now, car drivers seem to be much more bike aware. It may just be that my bikes have mostly been twin headlight and very tall since about 95, although if anything that would warn any anti filtering drivers that I was coming through if they wanted to close down a gap.

They're for making it clear that you're the sort of guy who doesn't give a damn how stupid you look, as long as people are looking at you.

I mean, not that you're the sort of guy who gives a damn about whether people are looking at you or not. Hey! Hey you over there! Look how much I don't care about you looking at me! Cool

Medium Apes are fitted for comfort believe it or not. I like my bars to be just not quite as high as my shoulders.

I get the feeling that a bonobo might be a little more user-friendly.
