.. because I was picked out of a hat for some sort of audit and they now need a copy of it.

Paid for my insurance, am like 4 months into it, then this randomness.

Stayed calm and asked what and why, the inconvinience to me, they didn't seem bothered and said it was for some FSA or something.

Never happened before, and BCF I ask you, what the fuck? Rolling Eyes

edit; spelt licence wrong..

Tell them to go fuck themselves, they're looking for an angle where they can say you're in breach and cancel your insurance with huge charges. They tried the same shit on me right at the start of my policy but as soon as I told the bitch on the phone I have recordings of all convos she gave it up.

Are you absolutely certain it was Swinton and not some scamming twat?
Don't do anything until you have called them back on the phone number shown on the documents they sent to you.
Check that they have actually requested a copy.
Better safe than scammed!

Or, more likely, they should have asked for it at the inception of the policy under the terms of their binder with the underwriting insurer, failed to do so, the insurer has now audited and realised they've made failings and Swinton have been told to go back and rectify those failings on a retrospective basis.

Sending them a licence which is as you said it was at inception won't cause you any bother. Sending them one with undisclosed points on it will, but then that's just you getting caught out for fraudulently proposing for insurance.

Not sending them a licence will more than likely result in the cancellation condition being invoked - most policies are 30 days notice and if the insurer cancels a refund on a pro-rata basis is calculated. Swinton cannot charge cancellation fees for cancellation intimated by them or their underwriters on the grounds of fairness.

Surely they wouldn't need a copy of your license anyway? Just your license number would suffice, no? They should be able to get any information they need from that.

Anyway, tell them to do one! Thumbs Up

Nothing to worry about with the licence and points side of things, i guess ill update this when its resolved, thanks all.

By bitch to you mean poor girl that works in a call centre? I very much doubt she wanted to see your licence herself but doing it as part of her job.

I thought you where all for the workers doing shit jobs to scrape a living slagging them off seems uncharacteristic?

Personally I can't get angry with call centre workers, they just have a shit job.

Any quotations have to be contract certain, that is to say that any terms and conditions that apply or 'subjectivities' have to be fully stipulated. For example - your letter would state: Cover is incepted with effect from xx/xx/xx subject to receipt of the following documents within xx days:
1) Copy driving licence

If it didn't state the copy licence was required then you are under no obligation to provide it - the contract remains in force as it was. However, as I've already pointed out, there is a chance they will, and they have every contractual right to, enact the cancellation condition of the policy.

Getting a refund, getting a new policy and losing your 4 months worth of NCD is a lot more hassle than photocopying your licence and sticking it in an envelope.

Just from my experience, I take it you work in insurance? If so that broad statement wasn't directed at yourself. Bad eggs in every type of work.

No. By "bitch" I mean the whore at my local branch who lied through her teeth and tried to BS me until I dropped the hammer on her. In it up to her neck.

Absolutely - bad eggs in consumerville as well Laughing

Generally speaking most people have an extremely negative attitude towards insurance based on stuff that hasn't even been their experience; they've just read about a bloke who had an offer on their bike which was too low, or how someone cancelled their policy for not having NCD, or refusing to insure their next bike purchase because they've gone from a 125 commuter to a litre sports bike.

Unfortunately, insurance is a complex arena and there's a lot of misconceptions and misinformation flying around. Also, very unfortunately, there's very few good people working at the ground level facing customers.

But those of us who do know what we're talking about and can help, try to where we can.

I would write back to Swinton and ask to see a copy of their authorisation from the FSA to act as insurance brokers.

You could drop them a letter or telephone call and point out you are reluctant to let them have a copy as this can be used for identity theft and fraud. After all you do not know how your document will be stored or who would have access to it. This is not an unreasonable concern.

Suggest that you are willing to have them inspect your licence at a date, time and location convenient to yourself but you will not allow a copy to be taken.

I think given that they'll move onto harass someone else.

In the time you spent on the phone and on hearing telling us about it, you could have scanned and emailed it quite a few times.

i thought that too, looking over this, he's posted and replied a couple of times in the space of 25 minutes. yet far too busy to scan/take a photo to send to the insurance company.
granted i understand it's like why should i bother etc... but it would have taken far less time just to do it surely?

Dont have a scanner, waiting for a letter, and posted here for 25 minutes to gain some advice as asking for this information so far into my policy seemed odd. Thanks for your input though.

Just send a copy of your licence but add a note saying how easy it is to pratt about in photoshop and add classes such as Space Shuttle and time machine and your unreliable photocopy is just that, unreliable.
