Seems to be a lot of insurance questions on here at the moment. So just one more quick one..

I have just moved house and not changed my insurance details over yet from fear of them charging me a bomb. However I realise if I don't change it then it will invalidate my insurance.

So the killer question...

How much (estimate) will they steal from me when I change it over?

Well, from what i was told a couple of days ago, a change of address on policy is about £25.
The thing is, my car is parked outside my new address, my bike is at my old address at my parents (still garaged). So my policy on my car goes up quite considerably and the other company just want £25 for the change in my address, even though the bike situation hasn’t changed. Rolling Eyes

I know someone who moved and didnt change his address with the insurance co, but did on his licence.

Got stopped and received a producer. Sharp eyed cop on the desk noticed the different addresses and the guy I know ended up with 6 points Shocked

I can't believe this, my licence is registered to my home address and my bike's V5 is also registered there. But because I'm at uni with the bike then the insurance is with my uni address.

This seems like a common situation for students, and I'm sure there's nothing awry about it?

EDIT: Right I've done some digging - this thread on MSE states that the address on your licence merely needs to an address at which you can be contacted. See leaflet INF1D

Depends on the insurance co. - mine charged me nothing for a move and change of address.

I moved house and set up the Royal Mail redirect service so got any important documents.

When it came to renewal, I set up with Carole Nash as a new customer again but at my 'new' address. Always cheaper than just allowing it to renew.

Impossible to estimate since you've not told us where you're moving from and to, nor what the transactional admin charge is which will be stated in the terms of business.

Anywhere from money back in your pocket, to costing you all the money forever. You'll have to (sorry) read your T&Cs, they're all different.

Fair enough. Will see if I can dig it out.

I moved from the Countryside in Carmarthenshire to the kind of countryside in Abergavenny

A friend didn't change the address and had a cancellation notice sent to the old house when she missed a payment.

6 points, fine and release fee. Already had 3 points too. Very costly overall.

That seems like more of a lesson in paying your insurance than anything else though, no?

If the letter was lost in the post you'd be in the same situation.

I presume they sent a few.

There are other reasons your insurance could be cancelled; though less likely.

Exactly the same to a friend of mine during a family dispute. He moved out, all car docs still at his home address. Payment(s) missed but he didn't have any idea due to not changing anything.

Cue police puling him over, no insurance, first two years, instant loss of licence.

Change of risk condition. Really, it's a case of insurance is important, don't just pay and forget about it.

I have seen his counterpart with the IN10 - 6 points. Unless of course he was lying Wink

It's not a problem as long as you've been honest about the fact the bike is kept at the Uni address not at home. If you're using your home address to lower the premium then you're committing fraud.

There's two separate questions - where do you live, and where is the bike stored. The reason being there could be two different answers to that - when I was young I had 4 cars in a lock up 15 miles away from where I lived, for example.

Well the bike is stored at my home address at uni, and I'm there 80% of the year so it makes sense. But because it's not permanent as such, it makes no sense to change my licence or v5 to the uni address.

that's fine. Your address can be place a and you bike can be kept overnight at place b, as long as you've not misrepresented that.
