I have been getting isurance quote tonight from ebike for adding a second bike to my policy.

I have some convictions so insurance is a bit pricey at the moment for super sports and as a results I found I could save by going 3rd party only.
Two months ago I was getting quotes of 700.

I tried again today, bearing in mind a conviction has expired since the last quote, I have more 2 more months claim free with them, 2 months more experience (when I started the policy I hadn't ridden for a couple of years due to a ban and had to do retest) and I am getting 2 months less insurance as it will expire when my current policy expires- Imagine my surprise when they are now quoting me 1150 for the same bike / same information.

I was slightly frustrated as I thought the price would go down to reflect my reasoning above and I want to get another bike soon.

I then tried adding an alarm, thinking it may make a slight difference, bearing in mind this is 3rd party only and it makes little difference to them if the bike is stolen.

This reduced the premium to 400 a saving of 750.

With saving like this to be had it will be well worth me getting a bike with an alarm fitted or even buying one after as an alternative.

If a bike comes with one already or I buy one. Will they ask for proof of garage/proffesional install so would I need this from seller or could I install this myself?

Thumbs Up

If you're going 3rd party, put whatever you need to get it cheaper - chained, alarmed, etc etc. At the end of the day, if your bike is stolen, they're not paying out anyway.

That being said, get a chain, and alarm and lock your bike up out of sight, so you can avoid it being stolen.

Insurance doesn't appear to have a logic behind it. However, 2months not claiming is not going to mean much, they only really care about NCB'es

i think if its a thatcham or if you put down proffesionally fitted they will most likely ask to see the proof.

although im not 100% sure

If I put whatever, won't they ask me for proof of purchase or some paperwork when I take out the policy -and possibly cancel it with me losing the money if I can't provide this?

My insurance asked for proof of alarm so I had to send them the certificate that came with the alarm. If I didn't then they were going to 'remove' the alarm system off the policy. Other insurance companies don't always ask. I just got a right dodgey policy this time round Very Happy

honestly, if your going third party only, get an alarm, get a chain, get a ground anchor and wack a disk lock and brake lock on there.

if its not covered against theft, make the arseholes who steal it work for it. (assuming it gets stolen that is, worste case scenario)

i will be having to get third party only and will be shoving everything except kevlar armour on it!

It entirely depends on the insurer, but (as you'll know) eBike do like to see evidence of things up front. You're going to have to ask them though, if you're thinking of listing security that you don't actually have.
