at the moment im in thailand learning muay thai for the last few months and have even had 1 amateur fight (which i lost) so far and found that even after all the padwork, bagwork, technique and sparring i still couldnt "get in the zone" so to speak

i can do sparring at 75% no bother but when it come to actually fighting, or even sometimes 100% sparring i struggle to find the point in it, i cant bring myself to wail on a guy thats done nothing to me and in all fairness is probably a pretty cool guy just doing the same as me.

does this make sense? i just cant get into the mindset of a fight without there being a need - like self defence or something

any tips to overcome this? would it go away over time/training? its getting extremely frustrating now that im coming up against more experienced and even pro fighters when sparring

cheers Karma for helpful answers Mr. Green

Can't give you any advice from your perspective unfortunately. I guess remembering that no matter how much you kick the living shit out of each other, at the end, he will shake your hand and congratulate you on a good fight. No hard feelings involved.

If you ever watch any MMA or fighting sports and you notice the competitors, they generate a hate within themselves and come out wound up.

You cant go into the ring thinking, "oh he is a jolly nice fellow, after the match we will have to go for drinkypoos".

You need to be psyched well before the fight, go out there wanting to rip his teeth out of his ass thinking whatever works to get you in a controlled rage.

Failing that, take up something non contact Very Happy

Surely once he's punched you in the face and kneed you in the ribs that's enough to want to duff his head in. Or is it all over by then?

If you're struggling to find the point in it then maybe you shouldn't be fighting competitively. But if you really enjoy it all and just find it hard to think of why you should do it then maybe try to get yourself hyped up like other guys have said.
Maybe think of it as a sport just like any other, you aren't trying to beat the shit out of each other because you hate each other, you're doing it to win.

Some people can go from zero to full on at the flick of a switch, these are usually the dickheads on a Friday night, they have found out that they can go full on and either cause little actual damage or have zero consequences and so know that they can give their all. They look frightening at the time and will walk away saying how they had shown the other person who is the boss. Usually it is because they have come across someone who is too laid back to get angry in that short burst of three or four blows.

Some people just don't get aggressive because in the past when they have got to that 90-95% they have caused loads of damage with very high consequences and so have trained themselves not to get to that point, but god help the dickheads when they do get to that 100%.

If you are the former then you will go ape very easily, if you are the latter you need to find that trigger and use it, but use it wisely. You sound like the latter.

This is the problem with starting martial.arts late in life. You're already pre conditioned not to fight or hurt somebody.

Experience will get you over, no form of sexual contact for 6 weeks+ before a fight helps anger due to increased hormones.

Perhaps you're just decently evolved and don't enjoy hurting people? I'd say leave it, you're likely to get hurt if you carry on without the will. You'll come across a knuckle dragger who really does enjoy it and that won't be good.

Unless you are fast or have very bad stamina, it's always better to be active to win rounds. Allowing time for your opponent to do something first is what can lead you to losing.

I know what you mean by just holding off, it's natural when you don't want to get hit. May I ask, do you spar a lot?

Maybe think of the fight as a job, you need to do your job and win the fight, don't go in there with the intention of absolutely ruining the guys face, go in there to land punches/kicks needed to knock him out and win, don't go in for a blood sport like most people are suggesting, best way to get in and stay in the zone is to stay calm and clear headed easiest way to win a fight efficiently, i used to have the same problem until i approached it with this attitude and just went in there to do what had to be done and got out again, go in there looking for blood and no doubt its what you will get, your own and his.

Maybe watch some documentary's on great fighters? anderson silva and fedor emilienko (cant spell the last name) both have great ways of looking at how to go into a fight and how to look at it, might help you out some.

I like to put holes in bits of paper 500/600m away.

Calm, collected and disciplined; a gentleman's sport.

When I boxed as a boy I had a similar attitude.

Now I'm a man and have been exposed to the shithole of this world for many years I would have no problem at all battering the crap out of someone (well apart from the actual ability to do it).

You need to find your anger, being fucked over helps that a fair bit.
