Another thread about filtering but thought i'd share my experience today.

I was filtering at good speed today on an easy a road with slow moving traffic. I caught up with a guy on a biggish sportsbike (couldnt tell which from the back) who was properly hogging the middle line as if he was about to filter but just couldnt pluck up the balls. Occsionally he would wait until there was no traffic in the oncoming lane and move right out and overtake 1 car and then get back in and hug the middle line for ages again. I was stuck behind him for ages. He had a young lad (maybe 9 or 10) on the back so i didnt wanna startle him by making any exreme moves, but eventually i had to wait till there was no oncoming traffic and overtake him as he filtered past another car. Whats the deal? I can understand if he didnt want to do anything dangerous with a kid on the back Or if he is just nervous about filtering but heck...why hog the middle like that so no-one else can get by?

Does anybody on here do this and can you tell me why?

When you say hogging the middle, do you mean just left of the center line? Cause that should be the primary position for riding anyway. Maybe force of habit?

Overtaking while he's overtaking isn't a great idea though.

By the way when i learned to ride, i was taught to occupy the middle of the lane...not the middle of the road (unless filtering)

Nope.

I am a car-to-car filterer type too (well, more gap-to-gap if I'm honest), I'm not too confident so like to go in my own time.

But I do check my mirrors regularly and if someone else on a bike catches me up I move in to let them past.

Tell you what I don't understand though, and I see it a lot. Especially on the A49 for some reason. I'll be pootling along at or around the speed limit on a relatively clear road, and someone else on a bike (mostly sportsbikes but not only them) will come bazzing past at warp speed and make me feel like I'm going backwards. Then I catch up the line of traffic waiting at the next lights and as I filter (carefully!) past all the cars and up to the front I invariably go past Mr Warp Factor sat in the queue!

I mean wtf is that all about?
