Once I've finished college (when I'm 18) I am immigrating to the states, due to my parents jobs.

I originally intended to buy a 125 over here do my full test and move up to a 400, but on friday when my parents came back from Florida they gave me a motorbike catalog, the yanks are so lucky, I'll give you a list of prices for Suzukis supersport range (as I'm a gixxer fan)

BRAND NEW GSX R 600$6999 = £3824
BRAND NEW GSX R 750$8599 = £4698
BRAND NEW GSX R 1000$9699 = £5300

I'm not sure about the taxes added but its america so its gonna be nothing.

I can force myself to make do with my Suzuki AY50WR till I'm 18 and buy then I should have £6k In my ISA.

Do you thinks its to much of a jump from a 50 or possibly a 125 to a 600, it is the states so the roads are just one huge grid system ?

I'm hoping (dreaming) Of buying the GSX R 600 Spending Another £1k on descent kit and the rest on insurance oh and crash bars mushrooms etc.

I also need to know if the 600 will cope with commuting 100 miles @55mph once on monday and once on friday and small journeys up to 20 miles a day???

Scott

I know it s a long way off but i dont wanna get my hopes high and then find out it can't be done, also if there any americans on this forums i would really appreciate your advise.

Hopping from a moped to a brand new gixxer 600 is silly.

Get a cheap old bike, learn to ride on it.

In the US they have lots of cheap low mileage older japanese bikes, and even a CB250 will feel like a rocket after your moped.

It's going to be around 6%. Not quite VAT, but still to be taken into account.

No. Some cities and towns are, but it's still fairly random.

A 125 is capable of that; a 600 is more than enough.

You really are kidding yourself if you're saying you'll sit at 55mph. Laughing

50cc to a 600cc is tempting fate.

US road system is so different to that in the UK...

small bikes are non existant in the US due to the distances which must be coverd. i say wait till you get to the US then get something with a big engine but low performance till your used to it, then move up to something sporty

I think that it is a question you need to ask yourself and be very honest with your answer. Are you going to be gentle for the first few months because you will have to BREAK IN the new GSX-R during that time you can't go over 4000 RPM for the first 800 Km then you can run up to 6000 RPM for 200 Km then have it's first log book service then run at 6000 RPM for another 600 Km then you can open it up slowly in small winding on winding off movements (just gradually increasing the RPM in small doses on and off every 5 or 10 minutes during a ride) if you are responsible with your machine and feel you will do the right thing then by all means feel free to have the bike YOU WANT just keep the respect for it and it will return the same for you I bought a brand new ZX-6R after owning a 1990 ZZ-R 250 for a year and did exactly that I have had it for 6 months now and am just starting to get a feel of what it was made for....action in corners and explosive acceleration. So it all comes down to YOU as long as you feel confident and remain responsible I believe it is not a bad idea to spend alot of money on something that will remain one of your most addored hobbies and intersts good luck with your decision mate Very Happy

No the roads in the states are not a huge grid system. in some places they are exactly like UK roads. however on the whole they are wider, straighter, dryer and less congested.
Major US cities are constructed on a grid system, as well and some towns.
sportsbikes arn't as popular in the US due to poor comfort, combined with the fact that most day to day riding envolves very few corners when compaired to europe.

Unless you have serious mental problems, you will be too scared of a superbike to go thrashing it straight after jumping off a 50. I'm sure you will be able to take it easy to begin with.

I suggest getting your car licence sorted out in the meantime and get used to a large 4 stroke engine in a car. this should hopefully help to stop you getting bored of your 50 too quickly Wink

No I'm Not joking when I say jump to a 600 when looking through there catalogs the smallest bikes i could find were 500 and anything below a 900 they call a learners bike, I hate harleys lol, I don't think i'd be able to run a bike in properly as im not the best person at gears at the mo, so do you guys think it'd be an idea to get a slightly older one, I no it sounds ridicolous jumping to a 600 but all the times ive been over there the roads are huge straight and mostly empty, the corners are no where near sharp,

Hi

A GSXR600 is a fast, quick handling sharply braked sports bike. Not really suitable for a learner.

Look at a GS500, GPZ500 or even a GPX250. Give it a year on something like these and then think about buying a sports bike.

All the best

Keith

Well having read alot of US Websites and things they always seem to suggest a 500 as a learner bike, like the GPX500R Ninja (basically the GPZ500S with Ninja badges on it).

That would probably the best way to go, for someone as inexperienced as yourself in the US.
