Normally I would just service the bike myself and keep the receipts and stuff.

However, my new bikes got a full service history at dealers to its current mileage, and I feel in some ways I aught to keep it that way. Even if I do the odd bits myself (like plugs etc) I think I should get an oil and filter and a dealer to keep the nice book up to date.

So how much do you pay for an oil and filter change and at which dealer?

Do it yourself, keep the receipts.

Or bank on getting charged twice the price of the oil & filter plus one hour's labour, even though it's a 20 minute job.

A 2002 Fazer? I'd just staple the receipts into the service history.

Going to find out soon... don't think I have any choice but to go to a KTM certified garage if I want to keep my warranty, which I do Razz I always serviced my old DRZ 400 by myself, it was easy as anything, pretty much fully serviced that bike while I had it - coolant, brake fluid etc. along with the minor service stuff. It was £25 for 4 litres of Motul semi oil (enough for 2 oil changes + some left over) + £5 for a filter, which is needed every other change - and cleaning the air filter is free so quite cheap for the DIY option plus you know it's been done right.

Nah, I have no objection with that. This is my 2006 FZ6.

Shocked I can think of so many better things to spend £50 on.

I don't pay for services, I just get the bits and find some lovely lovely person to do the rest for me. Thumbs Up

Last time I 'did it myself' I ended up gently riding my bike over to the garage 14miles from home to get the brakes bled...so I could have brakes again...thankfully the sv was well known for excellent engine braking. But it was a wee bit scarey. Shocked

Unless you sell the bike very soon, you will lose more money by paying a dealer to keep the service book stamped up than you would lose by not having full dealer service history when you sell the bike on.

The bike is 12 months old so still under warranty so its got to be serviced at a garage to keep the book stamped.

I also prefer to ride my bikes on my off time rather than tinker in the garage so don't mind paying to have the work done. Each to their own though.

Warranty is fair play, I do enjoy a good tinker though. Laughing

This.

Dont get me wrong, it's nice when a bike's got a FSH, but IMO is by no means a deal breaker.

I find generally that chatting to the seller, and asking what bit's have ever been done etc. is a better way of finding out about the kind of abuse the bike's been subject to.

When I bought the Bandit I asked whether or not the fork seals had been replaced under his ownership (I have an odd tendency to always buy bikes that need the fork seals doing after a few weeks), and I got the reply 'Didn't even know it had fork seals'.

I got mine serviced around March along with an MOT, they picked the bike up and brought it back £170 from the Suzuki dealer. Didn't think that was too bad a price and keeps the service history book stamped and up to date.

Depending what they did thats not that bad a price to be honest - if it was an oil and filter check they saw you coming, but if its clearances/plugs etc its not too bad.

If its just the oil & filter you need the dealer to do to get the stamp, why not supply the stuff yourself and simply pay for the 10 minutes labour?

Oil filter & air filter change? Even I can do that, might take me an hour or two or swear at the thing, but it really isn't difficult.

Now if you tell me change the chain & sprockets or check ANYTHING to do with the engine (valves, carbs, whatchumacallits) I am totally lost and will hand it over to a garage. I have neither the tools or the knowhow.

But you should be able to do the air filter, oil filter and oil by yourself fairly easily.

Just wanted to chuck another angle out there on the cost situation. I work away all week so my weekends are precious to me. I would rather pay £170 for a service than £50 for the parts and then spend a day tinkering in the garage as I'm not into the mechanical side of it and get no enjoyment out of it at all. Therefore for me the £120 is worth it Smile

Everyone's situation is different, as is everyone's perception of value for money.

If you're talking about the manufacturer's warranty, then the bike must be maintained to their schedule using parts they specify - doesn't have to be a garage that does it. If it's an additional dealer warranty, that *may* have terms and conditions that stipulate where and when it is done.

Bloody hell...

Couldnt you just do it youself? Neutral Would of been a lot cheaper! (Probably quicker too!).

Lol not quite the replies I was expecting.

Yes I'm fully aware that it will cost me £50 in parts to do an oil and filter change. I'm also fully capable of doing an oil and filter change myself. I've never paid anyone to do any work on any of my bikes and I've changed pretty much every consumable possible.

See, I don't have any objection paying (for this bike) £88 for an oil and filter change providing the stuff they use is decent. I do however object to paying £150 at my local dealer.

Hence the reason why I'm asking what people pay.

Try telling Kawasaki that if something goes wrong, they want a stamped service book as proof not some receipt from partco and your word you did it proper sir!!

Anyways like I said before, I'd rather pay the money and have my spare time to ride the bike. Each to their own, I know some guys and gals love nothing more than getting grease under their finger nails but its not really my cup of tea.

Get the first (free) service done and book stamped, and from then on keep your own detailed record of work done.

You can get an accounts book from WH Smith that is ideal for recording date, mileage and details of work done - and keep all receipts in a separate folder.

Take pictures of any dismantling and adjusting that needs doing, and keep them in a photo album or on a CD ROM.

As a potential buyer, I would put more value on an 'enthusiast-maintained' bike with proper records, than one that had been serviced by some of the garages that I have had the misfortune to deal with.

I service my own. Tappets, oil change, air filter, generally dont bother with lubing the cables unless a problem develops.
