At the designated motorcycle parking near my work sometimes the whole space is taken up by this guys Trike. The damned thing is a monstrosity to begin with but worse is that despite getting away with parking for free it takes up as much room as a car would. The guy who owns it is a grumpy twassock as well. Ive started countering Mr Threewheels by parking right in the middle of the area to block him if im first at the parking area in the morning, but as Im going out an about form my office this dousent stop him landing his Trike there later in the day.

So what do people think of Trikes? should they get the same advatages as Bikes? This thing is as I said a monstrosity its based around a car engine (VW) it has car gears (I suspect a reverse gear as well) and frankly looks like a yellow triangle of fibreglass vomit.

Personally I think its an open topped three wheel car and detest it, its owner and whatever Spunkmonkey who built it.

All the disadvantages of a bike (exposed to the elements etc)
as well as most of the disadvantages of a car (not being able to filter)

IMHO, they're actually a combination of the worst of both vehicles...
Unless it's a NABD requirement, they should all be kept off the roads (or consigned to an American Chopper-type fashion parade)

A trike's a three wheeled car and shouldn't be using a motorcycle parking space.

Ive heard you can use them on a car licence and theres no requirment to wear a crash helmet. If so more eveidence they should be given a ticket for parking in a Moto space.

There is a guy on a trike that lives around here - he nods at me every morning on my commute Smile

cool story bro, and all that.

Yea I think he should be parking in a car parking space, and have to wear a helmet. Thumbs Up

Wotcha.

Complain to your employers ( or who ever owns the car park ) . . . . it's their car / bike / trike / combination / scooter park.

FWIW I always park my trike in bike parking bays.

They're in license category B1 which is "Motor tricycles, quadricycles and three or four wheeled vehicles with an unladen weight no more than 550 kg". Same as quads and a Reliant Robin. You get B1 entitlement when you pass your car driving test, which is category B. Used to get it years ago when passing a motorcycle test (category A) but not any more.

So they shouldn't be parked in a motorcycle bay...

I've seen a trike around here in the last few days on L plates. But a CBT couldn't cover a trike surely? Could it? But at least the guy I saw did have a helmet on.

@Lone-Wolf, The parking spaces are local authority. Its not too big a problem parking a bike here in Aberdeen. Seems as long as your not causing an obstruction you can leave your bike anywhere. But these spaces are super convenient and it nice to park with other bikers for the craic.

Next time I see this thing I will photograph it. Just so you all can see how truly disgusting it is. It wouldent be so bad if it was a good example of a custom bit of building, but its not.

Really? The V5c for the CX read MOTORtriCYCLE

So I felt prefectly entitled to park it in any bay that wasn't designated motor BIcycle

and yes they do make that distinction on bays in Leicester. I miss having the trike, I need another one.

Trikes are a favourite with injured bikers. The guy may be grumpy because he's got a swing arm embedded in his colon.

However, he's taking the piss by nicking a motorcycle bay. Since he started it, feel free to email: transportstrategy@aberdeencity.gov.uk

They actually seem pretty pro bike, it should be said. Check this out: Remember that you have the same right to be on the road as any other user [...] Assume that other road users won't indicate their manoeuvre, won't stop at red lights and even with eye contact you might not have been noticed Shocked

Some of the old Reliant Robin based barges that knock around are a bit of an eyesore. They only seem ridden by OAPs wanting to take the grandkids on the back seats. That said I guess it's a form of transport and a lifestyle choice. I actually know someone with one of those yellow fibreglass triangle cocooned type trikes. Given he's owned bikes for most of his life and now can only walk with two sticks all credit to him for carrying on.

As a counter-point are people as quick to knock the newer sportier 3 wheel cars (2 wheels at front from the old Morgan days)?

Should I through old age or injury require another form of transport I'm actually leaning towards a hammerhead trike or the scooters like the Piaggio MP3 with 2 wheels ar the front. IIRC the profile of these are slightly slimmer than the ones that just use car axles. So some form of filtering may be possible. That said the Bombadier Can-Am Spyder looks interesting...

if he is taking up more than one motorcycle space then he is taking the piss a bit to be honest, it's not a very considerate thing to do - must be a bit of a dick.

Lots of my mates use trikes because they can't ride bikes anymore, and they are determined not to drive cars...

Plus, have you ever been passenger on a trike...lots of fun, especially going round roundabouts...*insert grin factor*

So definitely friend in my book. Thumbs Up

Is it a bike bay, or a motorcycle bay? There is a difference.

As a triker and biker I wouldn't park my trike (I have a Spyder) in a motorcycle bay. But be careful on judging whether he is disabled - I get mightily pissed at people making assumptions about my other half who is disabled.

I ride trikes cos they are fun and think it's a tad narrow minded to think only disabled people should ride them, but hey only my opinion - and like assholes we all have them!

Everyone rides what they like - simples

Each side of the motorcycle bay is a disabled space so if the guy does have a disability he could get a blue badge and park up in those.

Actually to go off topic a bit, has anyone ever seen a blue badge on a motorcycle?
