I was wondering what people need to do in order to be able to ride a motorcycle in the U.K? It sounds kinda of crazy from the tid-bits I've heard so far.

In the U.S. (At least my State anyway), all you need to do is answer 14 written questions and you get a Motorcycle lerner's permit that lets you ride any type of motorcycle on the road. The only restrictions are: No Riding after sunset, Must wear eye-protection, or have a helmet with a visor, and no passengers.

To get your license, you just need to pass a simple road test and those restrictions are lifted.

Right at 16you can ride up to a 50cc with l plates and no pillions.

At 17 this is the same apart from you can ride up to a 125cc.

Also at 17 you can do you're license where you can ride any bike as long as it is restricted to 33bhp for two years then the restrictions are lifted.

At 21 you can do you're full test and ride anything.

Holy fried monkeys!!!

The tests here are strict, but then the roads here are complicated, even experianced drivers/riders will get to certain junctions and not know what lane your supposed to be in e.t.c. (anyone who has ridden arround lecister or birmingham, who the **** planned the roads there?!?!?! just use your super psycic powers!!)

You can fail a test by useing your mirrors too often, or not enough, you have to turn the bike arround in a road (which would probably be the size of one lane of your average road in the us) without puting your feet down, if you do, FAIL!!! its amazeing anyone passes sometimes Razz

If they had similar here there would be allot of dead bikers Sad

Shocked Shocked

That sounds crazy, so after answering 14 questions I could quite legally ride any bike I wanted to as long as I don't ride it at night, wear some sun glasses and don't take a pillion? Confused Shocked

Wouldn't give you much confidence in the riding abilities of those on the roads around you, you have to do more than that in the UK to ride a 50cc which can't do more than 50kmph, and that still has problems.

How simple is the simple road test, how long is it, and do the majority of people pass first time?

What age are you allowed to get your motorcycle learners permit?

If you're 16 years old, you can get a Motorcycle learners permit by taking a 14 question written test (Takes about 15 mins). With your learners permit, you can ride ANY motorcycle as long as it's registered and insured. No HP limits, no displacement limits, etc.

You do need to wear a "DOT" compliant helmet.

The test is very simple.. Multiple question type test.

That goes beyond ridiculous1 I am actually glad there are such restrictions in the UK as it hands as a slow learning curve and improves rider experience. Neutral

Yes, a friend of mine said that she just needed to ride around some cones in a car park in order to get her license.

I frequent a couple of US-based forums, and I have to admit that I was somewhat confused at the number of tales about "friends" buying a crotch-rocket on a whim, but gradually understood.

That's pretty mental. What's the rate of biker deaths due to inexperience in the states? All I can say is go for it, but be careful and if they're not going to teach you anything, try and at least read up on bike safety stuff, it could save your life. Try this. God, I sound like some fecking grandad! Laughing

*edit

I just re-read your post, have you actually done this test? I wasn't sure if you meant you'd done it or were thinking about it. Smile

In all honesty, I'd rather have restrictions on what size engine I can have than be told I can't ride at night. I love night riding. Neutral
