Until it arrives recorded delivery, I'll keep filing these in my shredder.

I don't see why they cant just send you an amended licence and ask you to destroy the old one? Would save me the hassle of finding the paper counterpart or sending that letter back saying I've lost it Razz

Say you're involved in a bump.
They check your licence.
Hello, your licence says you should wear specs but you weren't at the time of the bump.
Insurance invalid !! Evil or Very Mad

Wrong. You only need specs for VDU use, not for driving, so your insurance would be fine.

Are you wearing glasses in your photo.

If so, could be your reason.

Nothing on the mrs' licence to indicate she's a glasses wearer unless its hidden in one of the code numbers.

She's worn them since she was little so learnt to drive and took a test with specs on. baffling ????

sounds like a scam to me - someone wants to get hold of your licence, identity theft? would be easy enough to make an official-lloking letter i'd have thought.

Exactly what my Mrs said.

She never heard anything about it. Quick scan of dvla/directgov website doesn't seem to say anything about wearing specs...in the medical section.

You will have Code 01 on your license if you wear glasses/contacts to drive. When you apply I remember there seems to be a tick box for it.

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_10022623

As an aside, if you have code 115, that means your organs will be harvested when you die. Thumbs Up

You can spot some of the older model Replicants that way. They fixed it for the Nexus-6 though.

August 2011. Start looking over your shoulder - they're coming to collect.

Hey.

As has been said, if you ticked that you need glasses to drive on your licence application, you get an '01' code on your licence, it's on the plastic but unsure about the counterpart, might be?

My mother and I have it on there due to being short-sighted. If your wife didn't tick the box when she applied for her first licence then chances are it probably won't be there?

Polarbear:

I think for most people, the 118 will mean the "F, K and P" provisional entitlements. When you apply for a provisional licence at 16 these are usually on there which means you had a licence from that date.

So, on your licence, the start date of your licence will likely be before the date it shows as when you passed your tests, if so, it will have a '118' code showing that the start date is from the earliest entitlement, usually for most people the ones I listed above. That's what I garner from it anyway.

Personally I only have '01' and '118' on my licence, don't fancy being an organ donor preferably.

OP:

If I were you, I'd just go to an optician and get an eye test. Make sure that you let the optician know that you would like a report and his opinion on whether or not you need glasses for driving.

If he says that no you don't, then just ring the DVLA telling them this and if they want the report you can show it to them. Hopefully that will get them off your back. Smile.

By any chance could this have been sent by one of those Nigerian Prince fellows? How would they know you wear contacts/glasses unless you inform them?

I've had 3 letters so far saying I have to send my licence back to get a glasses code added to it. I've not replied to any and I don't intend to.
