Gasket or Sealant - advice sought.

right, I needed to take off the side casing on my bike to sort the clutch.. And brought gasket paper to make my own gasket.. Made my own gasket which fitted perfectly well, but leaked when I took the bike for a run it leaked a bit of oil.

So I figured ok, gasket paper is a bit shit so I got a proper gasket from the manufacturers (triumph) and fitted that this morning and took the bike for a run and again it is leaking a bit of oil..

So what are my options ? Do I just take it apart and gunk gasket sealant over it all ?

And would you use gasket sealant and the gasket paper or just the sealant ?

Sealant is what I would do as a bodge till I had time to work out why it was leaking. More than likely not seated 100% correctly and worth taking off and retrying.

As for not sealing 100% correctly.. I mean it is just metal,paper gasket,metal.. Whats not to seal correctly ?

Both sides of metal were not scratched or chipped or anything..And it was tightened to recomended torque via haynes manual..

Use a fine oil stone to stone the 2 surfaces. This will remove any imperfections from the 2 mating surfaces and create a good sealing surface when you replace the gasket. This is the best way to do the job.

I am a maintenance engineer, and we stone everything in work as we cannot afford to have imperfect surfaces as our machines machine engine blocks and they have to be perfectly flat on every machined surface and the tolerences are rediculously tight. One piece of rust/dirt or burr on a surface means the machined part will not be perfectly flat.

Fitting a gasket is the preferred method.

Silly point did you clean both faces of the case and dab a bit of oil on the gasket before hand?

cleaned both faces but didnt dap any oil on gasket beforehand.. Never knew anything about that.

Clean both surfaces thoroughly, not saying you haven't but I mean the best job you've ever done, all around the dowels and screw holes etc. Stoning it is a good idea, but failing that some very fine wet and dry so the ally is a dull colour.
For a gasket the best thing if you make it yourself is oiled manilla, failing that OEM, don't buy cheap chinese shit. Lightly oil both sides and offer it up. make sure it's seated correctly and put diagonally opposed screws in, tighten these very lightly. Put the other screws in and tighten up diagonally, don't go mad cos making it tighter won't stop a leak, getting it even is more important.
If this fails degrease everything, get a new gasket and use 3-bond gasket sealer (e.g.Yamabond) and lightly coat each side of the gasket with this and repeat. If this doesn't work and you've done all this the casing is probably distorted but I've never had that yet. Best of luck

I've had the same problem a few year's back. As every one has said it need's a clean surface to compress on to. Our Sunday market tool man sell's wet stone's for a £5. Just a tip, I never oil my stone, use water and washing up liquid. That way the stone never get's clogged up. And it is self cleaning.
