Anyone ever forgotten to tax their bike?

I either forgot, or didn't receive the renewal letter. I now have to pay a £40 fine, £12.50 in arrears of duty, & tax it asap.

I've got a V10 form. I don't really understand which is the easiest way to now get my bike taxed though.

I started filling out the V10 form, but then went i got to the section about when I want the tax disc to start, it mentioned something about paying back dated tax (which I'm guessing is the £12.50). To pay this backdated tax, it sounds like I have to go to a DVLA local office.

Do I still fill out this form and post it back though? Or take it with me to the DVLA office? Or phone the payment line (to pay the fine) and pay the arrears at the same time? Or go to a post office to sort it all out?

They don't make things easy.

I did 'forget' it once.

Got pulled on the way to a bike meet where they were checking out bikes conditions.

Thankfully they didn't notice the no tax amongst other things. I prompted counted my blessings and did it as soon as I got home.

It's SORN'd and I ride it, soon as they roads start getting anywhere near decent I'll pay to ride on them.

I didn't correctly SORN my scooter when I wasn't using it and as such incurred a 'your vehicle isn't taxed' fine. Naturally I had a good old panic. But I gave them a ring and when they realised it was genuine error, they were happy to waive the fine. They just told me to be more careful in future.

Try giving them a call. Although the DVLA can be maddeningly incompetant, they are also human. If you can convince them that you weren't trying to shirk the payment they may be willing to let you off with a slap on the wrist.
