I had some of these starting with me in the Cambrian Rally years ago. Armstrong 600s (kickstart) for the hoi polloi lower ranks and Harley Davidson 350 (electric start) for the officers.

Looked exactly the same except for the starter button and the colour of the face of the rider as you are not allowed to start your bike until it's time to pull away. There was Private Parts leaping frantically up and down on the dodgy left hand kick start whilst Major Bumleak pressed the button and told him to, "Get a bloody move on private!"

I believe a standard mod is to put the disc brake front end from the mt350 onto the mt500 (that's a 500 - or 480-ish cc - not a 600!)

Getting a bit long in the tooth but given that they were meant to be used by squaddies can take an exceptional amount of abuse and mending. I believe Rotax engine so that's got a good pedigree.

This article (clicky link) may be worth a read.

Parts can be got from Force Motorcycles.

That is not a 'Harley'.
It is a CCM.
Deisgned by Clews back in the 1970's, using a rotax engine & cheeney Scrambles frame, it was built by Armstrong (who bought CCM for the BSA Military contracts he aquired in job lot from BSA liquidation auction when he bought loads of B40 bits & tooling from development dept to carry on building his B40 Scramble Specials)
Armstrong joint ventured it with 'Bombardier' Canadian Skidoo-maker who owned part of Rotax.
US DoD precurement demanded a certain % of US manufacture, & to make bike NATO wide 'standard' Bombardier sold a licence to Harley to assemble from kits.
Armstrong sold Clews and got out of bike building. Clews went on to concentrate on building enduro & street-bikes for civvy market.
Bombardier / Can-Am got out of bike business to concentrate on Skidoos, & Agri-Quads.
Left Harley only one left making them, under licence & continued to until licences & contracts expired. Even then though, most parts were sub-contract & all harley did was assemble them and slap thier badge on the side.

Not quite. See this site (clicky link) - linked to this one for the UK.

IIRC Bombardier also owns Rotax so the Rotax powered Can-Am can be seen as an in-house trike.

Thumbs Up

The engines are bomb proof but the suspension really needs modification, plus a decent set of renthals.

I have competed on one of these for many years until they were taken out of service.

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh, the good 'ol days.

I'm thinking an MT would make a good project bike as I think the 350 is under 33BHP. I would like an adventure bike but I can't afford a BMW but the MT looks to me that it could be outfitted with a screen and some panniers and make a decent bike for runs into the Cairngorms for camping trips. What tweaks and additions could help with a plan like this?

You obviously envisage a future where you don't have to ride too many corners then Wink Very Happy

About the only HD I have seen, apart from the re-badged CCM above, that looked ok was the Dark Sportster. I think it was the lack of chrome Wink Still underpowered and not really my thing. The association with agricultural machinery doesn't help either.
